Info It's not needed

Step 3 score is not needed before starting residency unless you actually need it for the H1B visa and in that case you need your score before you even go for the interview.

Did I answer you question

hi,
so, if one needs a h1b visa, step3 score is not necessary during application process.. application can be done without it as long as the step3 score is in our hands before we walk into the interview. am i right??

Yes. you are right.
In your CAF in ERAS, there's a question that ask you about your USMLE exams.
The options are: (passed, failed, will take, and awaiting results). So you can choose awaiting results and the programs will understand that you have taken the exam and you just don't have the results yet. They may even email you or call you before the interview to ask about the results but usually they'll ask you for the results during the interview.
However, I have to remind you that if you are looking for H1B Visa then usually there are thousands others who have already got the Step 3 results before applying to the match. In that case you maybe at a disadvantage compared to them at this particular point. But again, your Step 1 and Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS and ECFMG certification is far more important than your Step 3 results even if you want H1 Visa.

okay so what if we appear for the interview (at a program that offers h1) and then appear for step 3 after the interview ... but before the rank order listing ... and before the match ... does that help ? or is such a candidate at a disadvantage ...

one more question ... how important is it to score well in step 3 ??

Allow me to answer you,
Lee is not here today

For your first question;
Yes. such a scenario is possible but you will certainly be at a disadvantage compared to the applicant who's got the step 3.
Some programs do have some flexibility but most of the IMG-friendly programs are not willing to send you an interview if you need H1 visa and have no Step 3.

For your second question;
Step 3 score does matter but to a much much lesser extent than CK and Step 1 scores.

Just a note, apparently Step 3 scores take a bit longer to come out. Step1 and CK usually say 3-6 weeks but seems consistent with 3 weeks for the most part.

But for Step 3, it clearly states that it may take upto 8 weeks!!Just wanted to remind you that in case you are planning/expecting them to be out at a certain time.
