Default step 3 failure

Hello everyone,

I am an IMG interested in Internal Medicine residency. yog-2012, need a visa. Started the usmle path after graduation. Step scores are not that great(low ck). Recently I gave step 3 in march, but unfortunately could not make it. I really don't know what to do now. Should I even continue or drop everything.
Will retaking step 3 make any difference. And if I do is it necessary to take it before sept 15?
Please help me. I understand that everyone here has their own problems. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all

I'm sorry to hear - how did you fail Step 3?
What were your mistakes?
Taking that failing experience what would you do differently now?
What was your strategy for preparation?

Definitely, it is just too late to quit as long as you ECFMG - certified, go and re-take Step 3. All the bests!

Hello citadel08,

Thank you for responding.
The mistakes I think I made were- underestimating step3 , less prep time, completely messed with the ccs and I panicked during the exam. I was not able to answer many of the ethical questions ( could you suggest how I can improve on ethical questions).
You are right, after coming this far, I really don't know how to handle this situation. I don't know what else I can do if I quit.
I have been concentrating mainly on intenal medicine, so until now I only have experience/letter of IM. Some suggested me to apply for neuro, psych. But I don't have any exp/letter from these dept. so I doubt if that wil help me.

me.
You are 2012 YOG. You are too young. I'm 2006 YOG. I'm here after my home-country residency and working about 3 years as an attending. The best suggestion is re-take the Step 3, LOR is too subjective, experience - no one expect you to do a C-section or conduct TOLAC - Trial of Labor after C-section independently at the 1st day of Residency - like in my case, so keep claiming up. Ethics are kinda a common sense, although I believe there are some books available.

I would appreciate if you can recall all your CCS cases - perhaps after the exam, you wrote them down or still kept in mind. I myself here after second CS attempt. So, keep your head up. It is not the end of the world. Apply to residency in home-country and re-take the Step 3.

All the bests!

Thank you for encouraging me. It means a lot. I think I will retake the exam.

I am sorry, I don't have any list of the ccs cases that I got. Some that I remember are- Temporal arteritis, acute coronary syndrome, meningitis(bacterial i think), Road traffic accident, dementia, lung ca. Will let you know when I recollect more.

Sure, thanks much anyway. By the way, do you remember, how much was your UWSA scores, NBME scores and first and second pass of UW in %. Have used Kaplan? For Ethics I have recalled the book ' USMLE Medical Ethics from Conrad Fischer, 100-cases, I used it for Step 1 only (1 day enough to read, goes easy) And there is no Biostat, Abstract or Drug Ad question on the second day is that right? Ok, 2 wks to go for me

My uwsa score was 209. I did not use kaplan. my uw scores were around 68-70%. I dont remember biostat or drug ad questions on day 2.

Hey I have a question. Is it better to use a waived letter from US physician which is not on a hospitals letter head or a good letter from home country.

Of course from US Physician on Hospital Letterhead, if you to ERAS - LOR section, the same requirement is asked about LOR. It should be on Hospital Letterhead. Sure, if you want you can waive your rights to see your LOR, but in general it doesn't matter. Ask your attending about it. How he would like to see them with waived or without waived rights, too subjective, in general means nothing - I don't think that randomized clinical trials were done on this matter.

Yes citadel08, I read the letter requirements in The Lord user guidelines.
But my problem is that the US letter that I have is not on a hospitals letterhead.
All the best for your step exam.!

Hey,
Sorry to hear about that, I am currently waiting for my results.
By the way. You are not too young, you are just right. Most programs specifically ask for candidates which are no more than 5 years after graduation.

Ethics on the exam are not obvious, you should actually study them. uWorld or MTB 3. They may seem obvious but its not based on your opinion, its based on laws.

Know ethics and biostats well...bio stats is about 20% of the first day...why would you throw away easy points? The questions are not even that easy for biostats and skipping them in the study plan makes them even more difficult.

Hi,
I can understand that you are going through a very difficult time after your step 3, but It is very good that you realized your mistakes that you underestimated this exam and you need to be very well prepared for biostats and step 1 stuff for your day 1 exam.Previous startegy of leaving biostats and ethics and step 1 will not work for step 3 as they are giving 20 % of biostats and 10 % of other step 1 stuff which is alot together,So you have to be well prepared for it along with uworld questions and mtb 3.Please do not rush this exam again ,Give it proper time.Atleast 3 month before you go again.at least 3 times uw online ccs and readout ccs plus few more cases and 3 times u world with 90 % score at the end will help you .you can submit your result through e-mail as well to programs if application will close before your result comes out.I am also tutoring step 3,please contact me if you need my help,my skype Id is sj.usmle.

Hello Sj.usmle,

Thank you for responding. Can you please suggest the study material for step 3 exam. I have been reading mtb and uworld only. This doesnt seem to be enough in my case. So I would like to improve by reading more. Could anyone suggest any more study material.
