Post Is STEP 3 very important for my case?

Hi all, I am in IMG
My step 1 211, STEP2 CK 212 and i will take STEP 2CS in this coming febuary 2017.
I plan to match in 2018 and before that I plan to take STEP 3 to boost up my chance to matched in FAMILY MEDICINE. I had 1 externship experience in USA so far

any sincere advice for me to get matched? Is STEP 3 score really matters to me now?

Step 3 carries almost zero weight when applying to residency. That being said, unless you don't pass it on the first try, I would assume that it wouldn't hurt to have that taken care of when the time to apply comes. It also opens the possibility to get the H1B visa, which is always better if you can manage to get it.

Bottom line, I would take it.

I agree with the strategy. USCE w/good LoRs and publications will be far more valuable for applying to residency than Step 3, get as much of that as you can.

srry dude but your mistaken. Step 3 carries a **** ton of weight. Many programs "say" it is not a requirement but truly it is. If i were you I would take it before applying.

Look, the great majority of Step 3 takers do it during their 1st or 2nd year of residency (IMGs and AMGs). From that fact alone, you can conclude that Step 3 is basically meaningless for residency application. Don't know where the other guy finds his info.....but you can ask any resident at any program if they took step 3 before or after matching and confirm my point.

I'm not saying you shouldn't take it before applying if you can, all I'm saying is that you'd be naive to think that having taking Step 3 will make you that much more competitive, because it won't. By the time of application (Sept 15th) most applicants wont have that score, an objective measure that cant be compared to similar ones (as opposed to Step 1 and CK, which everybody has it) its basically useless to programs.

Again, take it. But don't buy the idea that its going to be the golden key to residency. Don't neglect getting USCE and LoRs for studying for Step 3.
