Smile Prep Journal -- target:FEB

Hey guys. so starting a new prep thread here.
please feel free to join in and keep everyone around u motivated to study too.

(cos most of us get lazy by the time step 3 comes along.. )

any how..

so im gonna be starting with Kaplan qbank tomorrow onwards..
and am watching step 3 videos simultaneously.

Honestly speaking if u watch the videos at a 1.5x speed ... each system in IM should not take you more than 2 hours time. (i think that is as much as i can concentrate as of right now! need to get back into the groove)
while doing the videos im referring to MTB for ck (for my CK notes from uworld) and the MTB - 3 as the knowledge base for step 3.

info given in both books is almost the same (obviously basic medical sciences remain the same) but the major difference is the way things are presented... with respect to CCS or answering questions.

Feel free to post on what target u hv for the day/week.. theory and question wise..
or any isolated/twisted facts/ question you might come across that might help the people around you.

(will be doing the same myself)

good luck everyone!

Default Great Idea!

This is a great idea.
I hope it does keep us motivated.
I'm doing Kaplan Videos, right now I'm doing Pediatrics.
I feel they are pretty good to get you started.
I'm using the 2002 version...any one wants to share differences or experiences with the new videos?

I like that the Lecturer gets exactly to the point, and she review buzzwords for the Differential Dx...

i dont know. was thinking maybe 1 block based on topics iv covered and 1 block in random mode...??

even if i finish 2 blocks today (solving and reviewing the reltd theory) i'll be pretty satisfied

Ok, do let us know if u find Kaplan q bank worth spending time, as I am short on both money and time still if the questions are genuinely good and not made unnecessarily hard with rare cases and minute details I might also give it a try ...

i've come up with a preliminary sketch of a plan, but need specifics. please point out weaknesses/improvements in the plan

1- 15 days for initial read(kaplan videos, making notes on mtb3)

2- 30 days for uworld(2 blocks daily- total 1300 questions/48 = ~27 blocks/14-15 days) + mtb3 revision + CCS prep

3-15 days for final revision, any nbme's uwsa's etc(need specifics on these)

that adds up to 2 moths of prep, & i plan to take the exam in last week of jan/1st week of feb & get result before match day.

current position: i took CK 3 weeks back, got my result yesterday which is below my expectations, but i'm hopeful i will not have forgotten all that stuff so soon

Default Ck vs step 3?

Hi, I took CK on nov 25th, now getting ready to prepare for step 3. My first impression about the MCQ part of step 3 is that it is very similar to CK. So, why take different preparation? Can anyone tell me what the difference is between CK and MCQ of step 3?

Thanks.

ck is based more on figuring out the diagnosis.. and a little of tests and treatment. basics.

step 3 - questions basically hand u the diagnosis and a majority of questions are directed towards actual patient management. what tests are done at what stage etc. a little more in detail than best initial and most accurate test.

i think more of the what is the next best step in the management kind of questions.

also from whatever mcqs im doing so far.. even the answer choices are very very close. so concepts need to be crystal clear.

but yes. good ck prep helps and goes a long way!

reviving this thread

ok so i've watched cardio, Em med, hem, endo & ethics videos
im atleast 5 days behind schedule already
need to finish IM in the next 4 days so i can start uworld from this 15th

so far, fesalis videos are way better than conrad fischer( fischer wastes a lot of time with his gimmicks & focuses less on the teaching part) but thats only my opinion. both mtb & videos feel insufficient for even CK, let alone step 3

hey @undead. dont worry about it.. just keep going! i think its pretty normal falling ahead and behind schedules.. as long as u can buck up and catch up to ur planned stuff its ok. fretting over it just wastes more time!

agree with ur thought on the videos though.
hv a feeling that im gonna need to revise all of my CK stuff simultaneously (mtb 2 with the added uworld notes) along with MTB 3.

what do u guys think?

also a quick review for kaplan qbank :

it seems pretty alright to be doing along with the inital prep.
feel that it tests less obscure facts and more of genuine stuff that could be on the test.

(unline the CK qbank which i didnt like at all!)

also helps that every question has a link to the corresponding MTB 3 page.
makes life easier -- specially cos i'm still figuring out whats where in the book!

Conrad Fischer really did a good job with the qbank.

BUT for ALOT of things - im having to re-open my step 2 MTB and even Step 1 physiology books.
whoever said that the mcq portion of the test was "easier" than CK... was a little off target i think. the test is a little more detailed than CK. (came across some basic science oriented questions)

im bored of videos & still not motivated enough to start uworld

did the kaplan qbank free block on their website, got 65%, still looking for the motivation to start my uworld subscription

ok there's 1 thing to discuss; 1 of the kaplan q's explanation said that ligation is the best prophylactic measure for grade 3 esophageal varices, but all the guidelines recommend propranolol over ligation, even for grade 3 varices.

God help me & give me the courage & willpower to start doing uworld :sorry:

What Kaplan videos are you doing? Step 2 or Step 3? What version is this?
Can you please share them, if you can?

interesting question:

a 63 y/o Female comes with substernal chest pain of 1 hour duration.
She is a K/C/O Afib and is currently on aspirin Prophylaxis for the same. Her EKG shows suspicious T wave inversions in leads II III AvF. She is started on Heparin, Beta Blockers, Aspirin, Clopidogrel. The patient stabilizes. Later her BP falls to 100/60 and her HR to 55/min her Beta Blockers are discontinued.
Currently her EKG shows pauses between beats from 1.2sec to 2 sec. The cardiologist is consulted and is unsure of the suspicious T waves.
What is the next best step to diagnose cardiac ischemia.

A- LDH levels
B- Myoglobin levels
C- Stress Echo
D- Stress EKG
E- Dipyradamole thalium
F- Stress thalium

Question on MI: next best step?

Long time no updates

I've been doing uworld at snail's pace, have completed 50% of it, with a cumulative score of 65%. I hope to improve that to 70% by the end of the subscription, but its so damn hard

im still doing kaplan qbank. done with 60% of it. doing decently well.. but have not alot of confidence in my ck knowledge.

going back to study MTB for ck along with Kaplan CK book for 1-1.5 weeks.
the questions and concepts tested are very precise.. need a better revision if i am to do well on this test!

Default couldn't make it even on extended period, what to do

Hi guys,

I'm glad to know this topic as I am also a step 3 taker and need study motivation like you guys. And I have a question: I couldn't take the test even on my already extended period, so should I just cancel the test date on the prometric center and then do all the submitting paper work again or I don't even need to make a cancelling for my test date on prometric center?

I'm quite concerned as I'm not sure if there is any additional charge from cancelling in prometric.

Any idea would be very appreciated. Thanks!

You can call prometric to know precisely about it.

OK, here is what to do in case you couldn't make the test on your even extended period:

1. Call prometric center (the number stated in your scheduling permit, not the place you take the test) and let them know that you want to make a cancellation and they will walk you through the process.

2. Wait at least 10 days after your extended period is expired to make another new application in fsmb website and it would be an online form only.

It sounds simple but takes me 3 hours just to call, wait and be instructed to call other numbers and that circle just goes around until things are clear.

Anway, during my search I find out that there is a modification on step 3 exam with declining of MCQs. This leads to the delay in score report for those who take the test between Feb and May.

That's pretty cool. Good going
Also good luck for ccs. .. So far that actually seems like the manageable part of step3
It's actually turning out more difficult to do the theory for day 1 of the test!

About 1 week left to exam, plan to take the UWSA in a couple of days. There's still too much to do & not enough time.

What should be my top priority for the last week prep?
