Smile Exam in 3 days..venting/ranting

Just venting out..

I'm a PGY-1 IM resident who started preparing for step 3 last month amidst a busy rotation. Mainly studied on lighter days; half-asleep. Used Step up to Med and MTB3 depending on weakness + UW and Archer lectures.

By the time I'm in relatively lighter rotation this month, my body/brain just wanted to take a break. So studying didn't speed up that much. I've finished UW and books once each but just don't have time/energy to review them all. Took UWSA two days ago - 227/540.

Just keeping fingers crossed not to discover UWSA fooled me. Moral of the story - if you take step 3 before residency, you can study full time with less background/practical knowledge. If you decide to take step 3 during residency, start reading from the first line again.

Hope I can come back with a nice success story. Good luck to everyone facing the last of nightmare exams..

Can you please share your exam experience here? Did you find questions similar to UW/ UWSA? Which book you found most useful for this exam?

I think questions were similar to UW/UWSA. Being IM resident may bias book choice. Here's my exam experience.

Day 1: first 4 blocks were ok; I had no clue for the last three blocks. Being a fast reader, I used to have 5-10min extra time in step 1&2. For step 3, I almost ran out of time in many blocks. Partly due to much less practice time with questions.

I think UW prepared me well for concepts tested although the last blocks had questions from out of this world like in other steps. As mentioned in previous post, I didn't have much time to read. So Archer audio lectures helped me a lot as I could just listened when I was too tired to read. I used Step up to medicine for weak areas ( used it in step 2). MTB is good, too. All in all, I think practicing as many questions as you can is the key.

For drug ads and abstracts, it helped to read the questions and options first so that you will know where to look for the answers. Most of them were stat questions in disguise. If you know basic stats from step 1 well, no need to sweat. Just make sure you don't get carried away digging the answer by reading the whole article in depth. If I couldn't find the answer right away, just marked it and come back later.

Re: CCS, practiced UW 52 cases 1.5 times. Although there was only one case exactly similar to UW, it was sufficient to tackle since differential diagnoses were the same. I did screw up a peds case but hopefully, itll be fine.

On day 2, before logging into my computer, I wrote down all the basic facts for CCS on one of the laminated sheet provided as soon as I entered the room. It took only 3min but helped big time as I couldn't think thoroughly during exam. Since I haven't logged into system, I didn't waste a minute from exam hour. For example, work up for first pregnancy visit, basic labs + hCG, pre-op prep, pain/nausea/fever control, blood cultures - 1 min - antibiotics, etc.

Hope it helps..

On a side note, I passed in-training exam in October of intern year. It was 10-100 times harder than step 3. So I was familiar with the uneasy feeling during exam and having a fair result in the end..& I was not shooting for high scores in step 3 which reduced stress a bit
