Question When to take Step 3

Hi everyone!
I'm done with Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS and have started studying for Step 3. I'm applying for Pediatrics and IM/Peds this year.
Can anyone please tell me when's the best time to take Step 3? Is it before, during, after the interviews (assuming I get any ) or after I match? I heard that PDs rank candidates according to their Step 3 scores (at least the candidates who's Step 3 scores are available); is this true?
Whats the optimum Step 3 score to ensure I match into a good University program?

Thanks!

Step 3 is not required to match in ANY university program if you have good USMLE scores and solid USCE.

Step 3 most of the time is taken during residency just to get it out of the way..

When people take it before is because:
  1. They want a solid score to balance their application after a previous step failure.
  2. they want to apply for the H1B visa (which latter can get converted into a green card).
  3. They have a huge EGO and just want to have everything done.
The best time to take step 3 is when you feel ready depending on your goals and objectives for the future.

Anything above the mean for an IMG is an optimum score, this year step 3 mean is 221, so try to aim for more than that.
