Default Step 3 -Pharyngitis


Cause: Group A strep

1. Sore throat
2. Tonsillar exudate
3. Cervical adenopathy
4. No cough

- Initial test: Rapid strep test
- Most accurate test: Culture

Frequently asked


- If all 4 symptoms are present − Tx. Penicillin or
amoxicillin. For penicillin allergic patient Tx.
azithromycin or clindamycin

- If 2 or 3 symptoms are present− do Step test

- If 0 or 1 symptoms presentTx. Symptomatic treatment

- In adults negative step excludes the pharyngitis- no further
test or treatment is required

Complication: it can lead to rheumatic fever and APGN
