Experiences XpaezX Step 3 experience

Just finished step 3 , it is a long as hell exam!!! Contrary to what others have said i felt day 1 to be easier than day 2... Some vignettes where extremely lol wtf

UWORLD cumulative 74%
Kaplan qbank 70%
Usmleconsult 66%
Did uworld ccs cases thrice

CCS cases are all right.. They end when you do everything correctly or you ask for a consult??? ( in surgical cases )
Finished all cases in 10 minutes or less.

Finally done with the steps! ! Good bye!

Thank you for sharing the information. Please let us know when you will get the result. I am also preparing, still UW cumulative is 63 %, did almost half, but the subjects that I am currently doing the third time I get better percent, maybe will improve by the end. Still I haven't done CCS cases seriously. I don't know why I am more concerned about tests.
Would you please tell also what score do you expect?
What would you advice to improve score?
I am doing medstudy IM videos, as I have noticed that always Kaplan covers only part of the particular step questions, and as I do those lectures I have found there are questions in UW that only they cover. What else would you recommend to read for subjects other than IM?
Thank you very much.

I uses mtb3. And the q banks I already mentioned for ccs I did a little bit of archer but got bored and ditched it

I don't know anything about medstuy .. I you feel it's working for you then by all means do it!!!

CCS is easy so just do uworld and you will be fine!

For biostatistics I suck so much is not even funny... I just never grasped the concepts of this crap, since step 1 i have struggled with that so i wouldnt be the best person to give advice

I seriously dont think you need to do CK notes for this exam.. THis is more of a management / prognosis point of view... You need to focus on Uworld, Kaplan Qbank and some others in order to feel more in tone with what the exam expects from you.

I would recommend some CK review if you took your exam long ago.. If you didnt just focus on get accostumed to the way thinks are asked.

Take step3 whenever you are ready... I dont know anything about the match because I decided not to pursue a US career anymore.. I just wanted to be done with the steps.

Good luck!

Default Update

I just did UWSA because I was feeling a little bit odd about not having any self-assessments.. I got 650/248...

Lets see what happens because for most experiences I have seen that UWSA overestimates step 3 by quite a margin.. Will let you know guys!

I studied about 3 to 4 hours a day, most of my time was devoted to my country's boards.

I started studying for this test on The first week of May

dude I can not believe you!
I have followed you and your advice since I was preparing for step 2. You seem like such a bright and intelligent guy, and not only that but you have shared a lot in this forum. I am sure that, like me, many people have benefited from your valuable advise. It just feels kind of weird not to picture you doing a residency here in the states, but I guess youll have a brighter future elsewhere. Best of luck in your future endeavors man! and keep up the good work!

Well done bro, Proud of you!

Worst thing i have ever read "decided not to pursue US career" - if there is one person who HAS to pursue a career in US its you.

Congratulations!

I appreciate your comments they are really nice!
The thing is that I always wanted Internal Medicine but the rotations I managed to get in the U.S were in General Surgery (I dont like it at all), and then I fell in love with Ophthalmology which is basically IMPOSSIBLE for IMGs (is one of the top 5 ELITE residencies along with ENT, Orthopedics, Derm and Plastic surgery).

So I decided screw this.. I dont have Internal Medicine USCE nor letters of recommendation and the match is hard as **** every year .
And I said to myself.. Why waste money applying to ophthalmology ? and why waste money applying to Internal Medicine when I dont have the requirements to get at least get 5 interviews? Im a little bit depressed about it but there is nothing I can do.. I had to come back to my country but Im having a tough time here as well because people dont like the fact that I have the Steps so right now im in Limbo!! And I dont know what to do .

I understand how you feel , but i must be honest , with your scores and your background im 100 % that you will have atleast 10 IM IV - i have friends RIGHT NOW that got atleast 5 categoricals in IM with MUCH lower scores and poorer background than you. I myself have 5 IV in general surgery. categorical and Prelim. I truly believe that you can get a spot in opthalmology if you do research and talk to the right persons, its hard but its doable. Now its too late but for next year , make sure you do Research until next match plus some observerships/externships - and then as match comes along - apply BROADLY and MANY programs, Dont be afraid to invest in your future if you want to be in US.

The only thing that will and can stop you from reaching your goals(residency) is YOU.

If you need any help with guidance or anything else , just PM me.

The problem is I am an ophthalmologist in my home country and when I started steps years ago I didn't have information how competitive it is, and I didn't know how high one should score in USMLE just to be able to have interview invitations in IM. Later when internet became more available in my country, I understood many things, but after finishing all steps I will not give up. I am an old graduate, unlike you, with lower scores, than yours, CS second attempt, but still I have a hope, that if I can be able to find a research fellowship in USA, I would be competitive. This year I didn't have any invitation from IM programs.
Somewhere I saw that you intended to apply for surgery preliminary position. I think it was not a bad idea.
I would like to ask you, how do you think is it more competitive (I mean preliminary general surgery) than IM categorical programs? If not, I would apply to that next year too. Also, if you like IM, you can still take couple of observerships in teaching hospitals, externships, and apply for next year, why not? I have only 1 observership in FM and 1 externship in IM, both in private clinics, which is not enough. With my current work in my country I can't have an opportunity to do observership in IM, coz my specialty is ophthalmology. I mean I will not have an excuse to leave the work for month or more for IM observership.
So I am in worse situation, but still have hope, I will try for something worth in USA or Canada like research, to leave my work at all.
Even with what you have, you could still apply for IM for next year. With your scores, and explaining in you PS why you had general surgery rotations and not IM. I think with your scores you would be an excellent candidate.

Congrats!! Awesome score!!!

How was your study plan like?

(Like, which qbank did you go through first and how many times? Did you read MTB 3 in between qbanks or just at the start?)

These are the resources you used for step 3: MTB 3, UW qbank, kaplan qbank and usmleconsult qbank for the first-day exam. Usmleworld CCS 3 times for the second day. Anything I missed?

Any other tips about the exam?

Thank you!! You're the best!

These are the resources you used for step 3: MTB 3, UW qbank, kaplan qbank and usmleconsult qbank for the first-day exam. Usmleworld CCS 3 times for the second day. Anything I missed?

Any other tips about the exam?

Thank you!! You're the best!
Hi!
I almost didnt study for this exam at all! I focused basically on doing those qbanks and revising some stuff from MTB3. I was busy studying for my countrys boards so I didnt devoted that much time to step 3..

Is not hard at all. You just need to switch your brain into the way things are asked.. FOr example Step 2 CK was diagnosis and management/treatment right? Here it is more of a "What physicial finding supports the diagnosis/ Whats the prognosis" kind of questions.

At the beginning you will score really low on most qbanks, but once you get a hold of the way things are asked the exam turns out to be really really easy going.

I started with Kaplan Qbank because it has direct links to MTB3 pages.. Which is helpful because it basically allows you to memorize MTB, I followed with USMLEconsult qbank (not necessary) and then did uworld (A MUST).

Uworld CCS cases are golden for this exam.. IF you practice these at least twice you will DESTROY CCS for sure.

Finished all cases in 10 minutes or less.

I didnt use any book. I focused on doing qbanks.

MTB 3 is a good book and I used it a little bit while I was doing Kaplan qbank because the qbank has direct links to the book.

Do we need the ECFNG certificate in order to register for Step 3 ? .
I just came out of Step 2 CS and will take a while to get the results . Also , after Jul/2014 Step 3 is changing in structure .
Thank you .

For step around 3 months on and off because I was busy with other stuff.

I took step 2 CK last year on November the 15th, got a score of 257. Took step 3 after 1 year of CK but I was consistently reading clinical medicine so it was not hard for me at all to keep my clinical foundation. I focused mainly on qbanks.

Most people (and I agree) recommend that you take step 3 soon after your step 2 CK, however due to CS, graduation and credential verification this is not always the case.. So the situation changes from person to person.

I did have a lot of statistics on my exam, but it was easy stuff like hazard ratio, NNT etc.
The hard part were the drug ads and abstracts.. I sucked pretty badly on those haha, just practice the ones in uworld?

Some people have done the uworld statistics qbank, i havent so i cant give you an accurate answer. If you feel weak in stats by all means try it out to boost your confidence

I just did the ones on uworld (Which are pretty similar to the ones on the exam)

Neither USMLEconsult nor Kaplan Qbank have drug ads/abstracts, however their clinical questions are pretty amazing if you ask me.. USMLEconsult asks some questions about prognosis and PE finding which the STEP 3 DOES ask.

Kaplan Qbank is a good way to memorize and understand MTB3.

No problem, if you have more doubts feel free to ask me.

Also one thing I forgot to say, if you are planning to do more than 1 qbank, leave USMLEWORLD for last, this is because like on previous steps it is the closest one in terms of difficulty and queation length.

Also if you have the money take UWSA, at least 5 questions (no kidding) appeared in my exam.

Happy studying!

I finished USMLEWORLD. I think I need more tests. Do you advise to take USMLECONSULT too? Is it good, high yield, similar to real tests?

I would advise you go with Kaplan first, this is because it has links to MTB3 pages and about 500 questions or so are written by Conrad Fischer himself

I had a surprise in Jan/2014.
I failed CS on Dec/2013 . I failed only ICE subcomponent the rest were OK
I need the name of the on line course you used .I did not take any courses live or on line before the exam. Studied FA , UW and practiced every week for 3-4 hrs with partner on line .
Your help is appreciated .

I read your post and could not help writing to you. The match is hard, we all know but you just can't give up like that. Now me, my interest is general surgery, if I were in my country no doubt I would be doing surgery for a masters, when I came here USA, and thru all this period I have been faced with a challenge, The question in my mind was /is will I get into surgery? it is so competitive even the surgeons here in the US say so, even American graduates fail to get in general surgery. But remember this is my dream and this is what I want to do. My scores are not great and I repeated step one once(got 221 on second attempt) step 2 I passed on first attempt but score low, CS passed first attempt. Am reading for step three hope to take it in April. I did apply for the match. I can tell u this for a fact I almost didn't apply to gen surgery, but then I chatted with a friend who told me, if u don't apply u will never know if you where meant to be a surgeon or not, coz u will have failed to even try. That chat helped me and when I went home I applied to a few gen surg prelim position and many IMs POSITIONS as back up. Guess what I have not received any IM interview but there something promising in gen surgery prelim. I have to wait for the match ofcourse. It is only one program and I pray and hope they match me. In other words, turbulent waters won't cease or fail to come your way, but if u have a conviction ,a strong one don't try to take the easy way out because at night in your bed, you will look back and start what if I had insisted, what if what if. Unless ofcourse if your decision to go back to your country is not out of fear, then u can go ahead, but if you are seeking the easy way out, please don't. Everyone is this forum mentioned u have great results so give it a try, don't feel pushed my us on forum make your own decision . My point is don't base your decision on fear that u may not get in. FOLLOW YOUR HEART, SOMEHOW IT ALREADY KNOWS WHAT U WANT.
