Default Score 250... Done with it!

Hi there,

I have been mighty depressed with the Match season. In a way my Step 3 score is depressing because I have very good scores on all steps but have only one interview and nothing else.

However, here's my story as far as Step 3 is concerned:

Study Material
Kaplan Lectures Notes: I will not lie, I have unwavering trust in their study material. It did me a lot of good. However, if you are planning to take Step 3 very soon after CK, it may not be necessary. I had a significant gap and stuff going on so I endured with it. Wasn't able to read through Ob/Gyn completely but I did the cases and it helped.
MTB 2 & 3: I went back to them because I already had a lot of notes in there from CK and I wasn't even able to go through it all.
First Aid for Step 3: The only consolation is I did not buy it. I used an old pdf version. If there is one book you can throw out of the window on a muddy street on a rainy day, it is this. Piece of c***.
UWorld QBank: As usual, CAN'T DO WITHOUT IT. I think we are all bored of hearing that already.
Kaplan QBank: Took it almost in the last week before exam and even finished it. It's at least 3 years outdated and that doesn't help at all considering Step 3 expects us to know the latest guidelines for practice. Can do without it.
UWorld CCS Cases: I took a two month package and started about a month before. 52+40 cases. Very reasonable. It's important to get familiar with the software because that's what bothers you on the exam day. The cases can be handled if the software can be handled.

Prep Time
Started about 20th Oct. Was sitting in library most of the day but was more interested in chatting with friends and obsessing over my rejections. But I guess, I squeezed in the hard work somewhere because I got my score as it is.
Took test on 28/30 Dec.

Exam Days:
I wasn't really scared. I wasn't too worried about the exam because I was worried about the Match.
Went in early and started early on both days.
Had the standard bananas, RedBull and Snickers bar.
Took breaks after first block then every two blocks except before last block when I took a longer 20 min break.

I did not have trouble managing my break time.

I had 46-47 questions on Day 1 and at least one drug ad in each block along with a few abstracts. I hated them. They are long, vague and always go over my head.
The rest of the questions were like CK, appropriately vague but doable.
The length of most questions was less than 1/3rd the screen size and there were no multimedia questions. There would have been about 10 questions in all that were a page long.
The MCQs on Day 2 were much less vague but scary because some of them were so easy I kept thinking there was a trick until I got my score report.

The CCS Cases: There were all sorts. Like I said, if you can handle the software, you can do the cases. I didn't kill any of my patients but four of them didn't get better, whatever I would do. Yet I managed to stay above the borderline.
It is not difficult, they didn't ask any uncommon illnesses. If you have seen any patients ever in your life and have an ounce of common sense, CCS is not a problem.
Only advice, take your time before advancing the clock.

Scores and Self Assessments:
UW Unused, Timed, Random: 73%. Started miserably, had to stop and go back to review lecture notes.
UW Incorrect, Timed, Random: 80%+, Don't remember exactly.
Kaplan Qbank: 71%
UWSA (1 week before): 248
NBME 3 (3 days before): 600, No score correlation given. It would be 241 according to one of the posts on this forum.
Actual Score: 250

To sum it up:
It's not something out of the world. It's just a massive pain in the backside that I'm happy to get rid of.

Post your questions here and I will get back ASAP.

Good luck!

Help Kaplan Lecture notes

Hi, Thank you for sharing your experience. I have a question about Kaplan lecture books for step3. Did you use/recommend KPLN step3 lecture books or step2ck?
Tnx

Thanks.
I have listed all my study material here.
One of my friend was using USMLE Consult. She found the questions very long and vague. Some of the questions she shared with me were ridiculous.
I didn't use anything else for CCS.
Good luck.

I used the Step 3 lecture notes. They are much less extensive than CK lecture notes.
As I said, they are not required if you have recently done CK. In that case, going through MTB 2 & 3 for relevant topics, along with points noted from Qbank would be enough. Or you can just review from your CK notes.
Good luck!

Thanks.
I am sorry I have never done offline NBMEs or other self assessments because I find it a counter-intuitive idea. Hence, I am not the right person to ask for a source.

Good luck!
