Question Taking Step 3 without a US Internship/Residency

Hi all,

Sorry if this is posted more than once, I've waited for the moderators to post this but it hasn't happened yet:

I'm in a very specific situation with regards to US Medical registration, and am hoping y'all can help me out!

I'm a US citizen, but have chosen to live in Australia permanently. As such, I'm currently going to medical school in Australia, and will be completing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CS/CK during my time here.

However, I do not plan on going to the US for internship/residency. I would, however, like to take Step 3 within the 7-year eligibility period since I am a US resident, and there's a possibility that I'll need to return to the US in future (e.g. in the case of a family member's illness, or should I choose to return).

It's my understanding that once I've finished medical school and Step 1 + Step 2 CS+CK, I will be able to apply to take Step 3 with the New York State Board (where I'd choose to live if I were to move back to the US), as long as I also apply for licensure there, since I would have met the general Step 3 requirements, and NY state currently does not have any specific postgraduate work requirements for taking Step 3 (i.e. it wouldn't matter that I'm not in a US residency program).

It's my understanding that although I may not go through with actually getting my full NY state licensure, my USMLE scores (steps 1-3) will never expire, and hence will allow me to apply for licensure in other US states, including New York, for the rest of my life (as long as I fulfill all of the *other* requirements in addition to the USMLE).

Am I missing anything? Do you guys think this would be a good way to approach taking Step 3 within my 7-year window?

Thank you so much!

Here is the site:

For NY no issues.

Your plan looks solid. I just hope after 2019 with no new spots and more residency applicants you will have a chance to come back and do residency here if required (not sure how it works if you are from AUS).
