Default Step 3 experience

Hi every one. Wanted to share my Step 3 preparation experience so that some one might find it useful.

Applied for this years match (2014). IMG. I finished my residency at my home country in a surgical speciality recently. Got my CS results in January end. Applied immediately for Step 3. Gave my Step 3 on Feb 20, 2014.

Started preparation for Step 3 in November end after my CS exam. Was working in a full time research. So could squeeze out only a couple of hours of study each day from November until Feb end. Inconsistent though. In the back of my mind, I just wanted to get done with the exam. I did not care about a great score.

I gave my CK 3 years back and had to brush up with basics now and then. I used MTB 3 and UWorld. Uworld average was 60% in timed mode in the first reading. MTB is a quick read and comprehensive.

Managed to do Uworld once and another reading of the wrong questions. Did CCS twice.

I took NBME 2, 2 weeks before the exam. Got a 410(I was told it is not very predictive). So went back and did Kaplan CK Qbank- all the questions just to brush up on basics. Gave UWorld SA 4 days before the exam. Got a 490- 215.

Felt confident enough to sit for the exam.

The exam was lengthy. Took a break after each block. Day 1 was hard. Day 2 was alright. Questions were a little easy. Uworld prepares you well. Most questions in the real exam are based on the concepts tested in uworld. I did my CCS really well. I think, I did a good job in all the 12 patients.

My advise to people preparing for Step3- Do Uworld. Read the explanations well. MTB is a good read. Just take your time and read MTB and the explanations in UWorld slowly and register the concepts in your head.

CCS is definitely the easiest section of the exam. It accounts for 20-25 percent of the score. So, do really well in the CCS. I think doing CCS twice in Uworld was a wise decision that I made. Really helped in the main exam.

Fingers crossed. My results will be out in 3 weeks. Will post my scores after they are out.

Cheers!

Passed with 224. Glad and relieved.

Few tips for future exam takers:

1) If you had a long gap between your CK and Step3, I would recommend you do the Kaplan CK Qbank questions. This will help refresh some basics. Do MTB 3 and Uworld. That would be enough.

2) For some one fresh out of CK, MTB3 and UWorld is more than enough.

The exam is long but doable. Keep your hopes up.

Good luck to everyone!
