Search Step 3 registration question

Hi everyone,
I noticed there will be changes in the step 3 this year. If I want to take it within September, I will have to register before July 31.
I am trying to plan ahead, given these circumstances. So, my questions are,

1. What does being registered mean? if I get ecfmg certified and apply by July 31 will that count? Or when they approve my application then I am 'registered'?

2. How long does it take them to approve the application, in other words, when do I get the scheduling permit? (If I apply around end July will it be possible to take the exam around end of September?)

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

1. You can consider yourself registered once you finished all the application to the step 3 exam (which includes filling an online application -where ECFMG certification is a must-, paying a fee and submitting a notarized identity form. Once all of it is reviewed and approved by the FSMB, they send you an email to confirm you are registered; your permit will be ready 1-2 weeks afterwards).

2. It depends on how fast you complete all the requirements indicated above. In the best case scenario -no delays at all- it would take about 2-3 weeks. But to be sure, give it 4-6 weeks.

Hi Sezary,
Thanks for replying. Just for clarification, I am registered when they approve my application, right? That means, I need to apply by July 15 to be registered by July 31???

Yes, you are registered when they approve your application, and there will be an e-mail as confirmation of such status. Now, not even in my wildest dreams I would bet for such a tight timing. I mean it's possible but that would be a highly risky bet. By now I am sure you know how bureaucracy works here. Give it a fair time.
