Smile My Step 3 experience

Ok, there it goes... it will probably help someone although my journey is not as brilliant as other people that has already posted their experiences... I'll post it anyway in appreciation to the forum.

Relevant background:
IMG (graduated in 2011). I took and pass my CK mid-2013.

Time of preparation:
3.5 months on and off (I was doing rotations) from November 2013, serious study (8 or more hours daily) just the last month.

Resources:
Kaplan books or videos: Did not use.
Master the Boards Step 3: Used it from the beginning, in parallel with
Archer.
Archer recorded lectures and CCS: Took note of all tips.
Kaplan Q bank (timed, unused, random) : average 67%
U world Q bank (timed, unused, random): average 63%
U world CCS: one round
NBME: Did not use
U world assessment: 210

Exam: Mid-February

Day 1
Tough!. Length of questions similar to CK (long). I would say that the level of difficulty is mostly fair, but as in any step there were questions that I had no freaking idea. Drug ads were easy in my opinion. Abstracts were a hell of hard, simply IMPOSSIBLE to me, so I skipped most of them (just marked anything and moved on). Time was tight, I had no time to review.

Day 2
Easy-going!. MCQ blocks were lighter, no drug ads or abstracts.
CCS: Run smooth in at least 10 of my 12 cases. I finished early in almost all of the cases. In two cases patient never got better despite my best effort, so I think I screwed it somewhere, somehow.

Now I am waiting for the results. My target was not a smoking high score, just get rid of Step 3 with a decent score because I was feeling burned and very tired and ready to move forward to anything but the USMLE.

I'll post my score when available but in the corresponding thread.

Hey,

Just wanted to ask your opinion. Do you recommend Archer videos? If so, which is the must among the 1. The 36 hours 2.Strategies for CSS 3.CSS workshops?

Also, I just did my CK. Do you think Archer will benefit me? Or I should just stick to UW and CSS cases?

Thanks!

Congratulations, Sezary. Did you get any new CCS that you were unfmailiar of ?

Hey Smashingdude, I did 36 hour Archer lectures and I think they are tremendously useful in rising your MCQ averages. My UW went up to 75% after completing archer. So, certainly recommend it to digest important step 3 concepts at real base level. But if your step 2ck is more than 90%, you are probably good on your own without Archer.
For CCS, I would almost say Archer is mandatory since UW software has critical limitations on the approaches and does not prepare you good to excel on this part

Hey soma,

Thanks for the info. Just one more question. Will you be so kind to elaborate which CCS should I take? The strategies or the workshops? Which you think is more useful, and whats the difference between them?

Thanks a lot!

CCS workshop recorded pay per view are the best. The strategies is really only a 3 hour video and does not show demonstrations. Strategies are very important but you need to see how Archer applies those strategies in managing the CCS on software, it's fascinating and very clear, makes so much sense and I would have definitely not known many tricks if not for those demos. There is not much cost difference b/w strategies and full workshops...strategies it cost 70 dollars where as two workshops with strategies cost only 88 dollars .
if you need more info, glad to help

Default Hello

Hi Smashingdude,

Soma already answered your question and I agree with him 100%.

Hi Soma,

Yep, 75% of the cases were completely new I mean they were not in Archer or UW. But since we already practiced so much until we mastered the basic principles, plus we already studied for the theoric part of the exam, plus our personal experience, most of those 'new cases' were completely doable.

Hi Sarish,

I am sorry I don't have them. Archer is a paid subscription and you access the videos online. To my best knowledge you cannot download them, but if you have a friend with hacker skills, probably he/she would know how.

Hi LU DA,

Soma explained very well how things work with the Archer videos. It's a paid subscription. Google it or the web is www.ccsworkshop.com
