I read Trump wants to make sponsoring impossible with high taxes and minimum caps of 100k salary for specialized foreign workers would they pay you 100k as a resident? Lol

It's a good thing I have 5 interviews in Canada.

marcos got banned?! congratulations on your interviews in Canada! I hope you get in wherever your #1 is!

Kinda blows my mind how many unprofessional people are on these boards making accusations and being super aggressive.

It shouldn't happen in a field like this but unfortunately still does. Generally the IMG community is fairly tight knit and gets along really well. We all understand the struggle. Good luck to you as well!

Cool! You have a preference to match in the US or CAN? I heard CAN is also very competitive and just as lucrative in doctor compensation. Gosh, your traveling must have cost a fortune flying from US to CAN and back and fourth!!!

I prefer to match in Canada. FM residency is only 2 years here and the compensation for FM docs is significantly better. And yes, travel costs are tremendous right now. Especially with the terrible exchange rate.

Do you have any tips or advice for matching into Canada? I am planning for the 2018 Match.

Thanks

Hi! Sorry to be chiming in so late. My creds: 210/ 230/ Pass/ US IMG (India)/ YOG 2016/ 3m USCE/ 3 LORs. Application - FM tailored. Applied to 140 FM programs. 32 rejections (that responded). Only 4 IVs. 2 PD and 1 associate PD have emailed with "we'll be ranking you highly/competitively." Mentally preparing for SOAP.

I think your discounting yourself, 4 is enough to match. As long as you feel as though you did well in the IV you have a standing chance. Plus not every candidate gets emailed you most probably are not on a do not rank list which is a good sign.

to be sincere i dont think you have a problem since you have a green card. besides the ban has been lifted. i think the ban affects nationality not school of study

Well I have an Iranian passport but green card. Nationality and school is Iran. Even though this ban is over doesn't mean PDs will love me during rank time ;(((( they might screw me

You got emailed by a PD and associate PD? Were this from FM only or from IM also? I am so anxious.

Very impressive list to end the season. It was fun going through this journey so far with you and also others good luck on the last one. Now we play the waiting game. Congrats again.

Yeah it was turbulent at times, and unfair as an IMG as well. But hard work really pays off in this field. Connections can only take you so far regardless of what you've heard.

@jibber I'm tired of people posting I have scores of 200, failures, no USCE less interviews etc etc and then asking for sympathy. You have FAILED. PERIOD. Quit wasting time money energy and move on I am at MINIMUM doing them a favor. God dam.nit why can't you appreciate that?

My cousin spent 20k a year for 3 years just to match trying to get experience applying each year to get a big fat goose egg and guess what it wasn't golden! Quit while you are ahead this is for the top 50 percent of IMGs NOT for you.

There is nothing wrong with speaking your mind as long as you don't insult others. I share the same opinion as you on quiting while ahead and YES I do tell people that's what I think is best, but I'd never insult somebody's choices in life. The fact they're different from yours doesn't mean they're necessarily worse. I gave you a 10 day infarction and I really do hope you reflect on this.

@balaji

Negative or positive. I think ill take my chances with 6 IV + pending pre-match I got nothing to lose and if I do lose you'll see me here next year not a big deal I have strong financial support from family and am still fairly young.

Plus, keep your negative opinions to yourself please. In either case irregardless of what you say I still wish you good luck. Oh and by the way I don't necessarily have scores of 200's I have 240's.

Balaji69, I think we all appreciate real opinions, so feel free to speak your mind. But you told someone with 6 interviews to quit. There is no logic in that. hehe.

Y'all think FM will be replaced by nurses and PAs with "700 clinic hours". Y'all who chose this specialty is there any security? And don't give me that bull about 100k doctor shortage, in a shortage hell I'd let's PA's get in the door ... At minimum it will strongly cannabalize salaries... No?

Listening hey

Hi friends, I hope everyone are doing good. I need an help: I'm an IMG requiring visa and would like to apply for FM in 2017 Sept. So before that I need to get usce in FM. I assume that many people over here might have some USCE in FM. I searched in google but eventually I could find discussions regarding IM but not much about FM. Can anyone please spend 2 min of your time and help me in this regard. Thank you

Good luck all of you for the match day. Wishing you lots of luck.

Super duper nervous here. I had a pre-match IV that I never heard from (I feel I did 8/10) so now I am questioning my performance in my other 'ranked' IV's. What is helping me is a lot of TV to get my mind off things lol. I read somewhere this match will be another record match.

Good luck to you too Sara.

absolutely right! I struggled for 3 match sessions before getting this. My friend went through 4 or 5 match sessions before matching. Keep your head to the grind stone and just work work work towards your goal. that is all.

For all that didn't match keep that fire burning. For all that matched Congratulations. I'm certain you will make fine residents.

Guys I want to get a list together of the people that matched together with their credentials in one thread, so that it is not spread out over many threads. I think this will help people that are going to apply next year.

Go here if you matched and share:

It was a big relief to see that little window in my phone that popped up saying "Congratulations...". I ranked 16 places, but I know I matched at least into my #7 because it didn't fill, but I hope I don't go down that far in the list!

And just to add to those who didn't match, I have a friend who matched this time who never break 210 in all 3 of his steps, and needed a visa. So never give up hope, but you have to get out there and make connections in such dire situations.

For those who matched into family medicine, could you tell us what according to you helped the most? Also, does research matter for family medicine? Lastly, any tips for those applying to family medicine in the future.

Thank you and congrats

other than the obvious (scores, LOR's, ECFMG certification and applying on time with a complete application *huge*) I'd say some important things to have would be:
- Having lots of US clinical experience,
- being genuinely interested in the field (i'd recommend reading books about FM, public health etc, talk about those things in your personal statement/interview/interests), have a vision for the field down the road.
- go to AAFP family med conference and rub elbows with residents and PD's (worth the money but research programs on FRIEDA first to see which take J1/H1B otherwise you will waste your time and their time.),
- generally making connections in any way that you can, and
- working on being a genuinely likable person -- weird to practice, important FOR practice. Interview skills were huge for me and I am luckily usually pretty good at them. Act natural, likable, calm, don't talk all monotone, be memorable, happy, hopeful, like you're talking to a friend whom you haven't seen in years.

hope this helps

Firstly, thank you for such a detailed explanation. I really appreciate your time here. Also, how do you think I go about gaining the US experience part. I am a graduate so I won't be able to get hand on clinical exp, so, you think observerships would help? Also, how do you think I can land these, just emailing programs? I am doing that, but if you know of something that can help, let me know. Again, thank you for being kind and helping me out

Well, there are a few ways. I believe there are some organizations online which set up observorships for international graduates, but i haven't explored that myself so I can't say I'm an expert lol. That would be one way to go about it. Another way is at those AAFP conferences, some programs actually have observorships (make sure to ask if they do and get the info. follow up!!!) which is huge because you can show your competency and interest.

Oh, see if you can get a US ACLS certificate too.. from what I recall, there is a section on the application that asks if you've done it.
