Default 4 year gap

Hey Guys!

Actually i am preparing to give my step1 in a few month and hopefully be prepared in time to apply for the 2018 match.

I have finished my internship in 2014 after which due to circumstances i could not work . The country where i graduated from wasn't allowing " foreigners" to apply for residency and when i applied to work as a GP even that wasn't allowed as i did not have enough experience being a recent grad. I got married and had to move. However i really want to give the steps . But this is such a scary shot with such a huge gap . Do you think i should try or just leave it ?

Btw i am an img and i dont live in the US

Thank you

That's a very tough question and nobody is going to be able to give you a confident answer because data will be anecdotal at best.

I guess a lot of how competitive you will be depends on your reason for being away for medicine for so long and whether or not you can convince residencies that you have not forgotten everything you learned in medical school.

If you have been doing research for some or all of the last 4 years I think that would be beneficial as would a US passport or green card.

If you are absolutely determined to get a job in the US I hope you have deep pockets and the time to rock your steps. I'd be willing to be that if you could get >250 on your first attempts at step 1 and 2 that you will find a job.

You'll be fine as long as you get into some job or even a voluntary or research job to avoid any further gap.
However, you should have decent scores (depending on your desired specialty), some US clinical experience and US LoRs.

I would suggest that you can mail some PDs and ask. Some will surely respond. This will give you a direct idea (without speculations) from the most important person.
