Default Official 2017 Rank Order List Thread - Internal Medicine

Happy new year everyone!

Jan 15 is around the corner. Most of us are (almost) done with interviews. So, I think it should be a good time to start discussing ROL. Let's keep things organized in a single thread.

Congrats to those who accepted prematch. You guys just sit back and enjoy. For the rest of us, let's enter this crazy game!!!

Best wishes for the Match...

Hi friends,

How should I rank?

1. Jackson Health System, Miami, Florida
2. Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, Zoo York

Both are IM.

I have family in New York so I am considering ranking that one higher even though I know Jackson is meant to be better. Also, I am hoping that I get more invites before the end of January. For my career I only want to work in primary care so either will get me there.

Even if I had family in NYC, I wouldn't want to be at Lincoln. I spent my MS3 there and you'll see a lot, do a lot, but there's just too many social issues with patients that deter from the learning experience. But the bottom line is that most NYC programs do not compensate their residents well enough for the cost of living in the city, and as someone who lived there for a while, money goes a long way in New York. Plus the weather is inconvenient. So Jackson 100x over Lincoln.

From what I see on their respective websites, none of them seem to have an in-house cardiology fellowship program which is unfortunate.

I would try to find their fellowship match lists and see which one has the best track record for matching residents into cardiology or look at your interview notes and see if you asked on interview day for that information.

If you can't find that information my recommendation would be to rank the oldest and/or biggest programs first as at least they will have some sort of reputation and rank the smaller and/or newer programs lower.

Actually, Aventura is starting GI and cardiology fellowships soon (in 1-2 years), so I would definitely rank it above Blake. No idea about the other two programs in Florida. St Es Youngstown is a pretty small program and getting cards won't be easy (they have had just a couple match into cards from what I remember during my IV day).

Hi everyone,

Just deviating a little from the main topic. However, it is still a very relevant part of ranking.

Would you suggest sending a letter of intent to programs before ROLs are generated? If yes, when is it a good time to send such emails?

Thank you! Happy New Year! Good luck to us all.
Regards

Great IVs !
Personally, I would have probably ranked Uconn and SLR (maybe even Cook County) over UMass. I have no clue about the programs other than what's in their websites but UMass doesn't have a particularly great reputation in Mass.

Good stuff!

1. Einstein Moses & Weiler (Hands down best program on your list)
2. Jackson (if this is the main University of miami program)
3. Cleveland Clinic
4. UMass
5. SUNY Downstate
6. UConn

Sinai SLR, WHC, and Jacobi should all be above Cook County, Cook has no place on a list like this

Is SUNY downstate that great? I have heard negative things about this program. Also on the interview day PD pointed out that there was some warnings on last ACGME visit. It was on probation recently.

So yeah they had some sanctions because of duty hour restrictions. Its a solid mid tier university program with huge fellowships in house that save half the spots for their own residents. That being said its one of the most malignant programs in the country and has maintained that reputation for years. Pathology is incredible and the residents become seasoned quickly. I think a good marker is that no SUNY Downstate medical student stays for residency.

No...thats not the case... UMass is a phenomenal program...

they matched GI in UCLA and U.Colorado last year.Cardio in northwestern..this year if i am not mistaken they matched GI in northwestern..

the fellowship data of UMass is among the most awesome of the IMG friendly programs...I would rank UMass > Uconn for sure...adjusted for size of program the match data of umass is number 1 for img friendly places..

is there a reason why you ranked SUNY brooklyn number 1?

it seems you want to stay in new york...

if that is the case than

NYC Programs

1)Moses and weiler..by far the best
2)SUNY brooklyn= SLR
3)Jakobi

geographically Near NYC
UMass
UCONN
SUNY upstate

Other superb programs
Miami
Cleveland clinic ohio
UAMS little rock

rest rank them as per personal preference...

If location is not important --

1) Moses and weiler..by far the best fellowship prospects

2) Miami==cleveland clinic== UMass..since u like cardio CCF has the edge here...for GI UMass has an edge...for weather and fun Miami has the edge...their interventional cards preogram is quite awesome...hemonc at miami is great too...
3)UConn ==UAMS..
4)Upstate=SUNY Brooklyn==SLR

rest as per location and personal preference...

I guess we have to agree to disagree. Uconn is pretty competitive for fellowships as well. They matched into Brown, Buffalo, Drexel for Cards last year. UMass is a great program for IMGs but it's definitely not the most popular program in Mass (compared to BU, Tufts). I think many would regard Umass on par with St. Es, Lahey and Mt Auburn (which have equally good fellowship placements despite being community programs). Also, Worcester isn't exactly the most exciting place to live in.

Cards at brown is not all that competitive...Drexel is not a great program...cards at drexel==cards at any community hospital...AEHN philly is moe competitive than drexel...None of these places can be compared with UCLA or northwestern...

Auburn is a harvard teaching sight....that gives them huge edge in fellowship...Lahey clinic is awesome....

I have to agree with Detonatordoc here about Umass > Uconn. Its more research heavy for sure and many would argue the program is structured better too because you spend the majority of your training at the academic site vs uconn which you spend equal time across three hospitals (1 academic, 2 community).

I would disagree though about drexel though - Drexel is as solid as a program as UConn. Its an older facility for sure but the clinical exposure rivals that of SUNY downstate with ample fellowship opportunities. Not as academic as UMass because of funding but def more pathology and hands on experience. Really a gut feeling between these three and what you want as a resident.

I would say its affiliation to Yale(vs Jacobi's AECOM which is equally good), the work environment(Jacobi being a New York program).

You surely are going to match in your program of choice. Do weigh in opinion for others too.

Good Luck!

If you don't care about weather and location, Buffalo could be your number 1. Stronger than Rutgers NJMS. If you do, then this list is fine as is.

I was very impressed by my interviewers at SUNY Brooklyn and the majority of the interview day. I genuinely feel like any and all of the university programs on my list will help me get to where I want to be and the reason I have M&W ranked down a little bit is because I'm not crazy about the Bronx, the call schedule, or the fact that it is split between 2 hospitals.

And yes, to the person who asked, the Jackson is the UMiami-affiliated one.

Thanks for your input everyone! Your opinions are highly valued and I do not take them for granted

Is there any reason why Univ of Buffalo is considered a stronger program than Rutgers? My interview went well at both places and location isn't too important so i'm just trying to rank based on quality of the program, and where i'll have best chance at matching for fellowship

And yes, to the person who asked, the Jackson is the UMiami-affiliated one.

Thanks for your input everyone! Your opinions are highly valued and I do not take them for granted

that is a very appropriate reason for ranking a particular program high....much more important than any reputation or anyones opinions...if you feel most comfortable with downstate than of course rank it number 1...this is just like finding a life partner...u don't look for the best looking or smartest or tallest...you look for the right fit you fall in love with...

its probably just splitting hair...both are awesome places...however if you are interested in hem-onc Bufallo has the clear edge as it has the roswell park cancer insti...also rank the places as where u want to go and not where u think they ll take u...

I feel as if SUNY Downstate is the strongest program here... Any reason why its so low and the chicago programs are higher?

Thanks noncompliant. I agree with you, but I felt equally comfortable at the Chicago programs plus I have a family who are not very interested in living in NY. It is a hard decision to make!

Completely reasonable to rank programs where you feel most comfortable at. Detanatordoc worded it nicely a few posts prior on how its similar to choosing a partner.

Interested in future cardiology fellowship. Would love to hear your thoughts on how to rank my top 5 programs, and how the reputations of these differ.

1. Cincinnati - loved the program for many reasons, definitely wouldn't mind living in Cincinnati
2-4 - Temple, Maryland, VCU
5. Henry Ford - the program was good, but I feel "meh" about living in Detroit so I'm placing HFH at 5
6. Drexel
7. Rutgers (RWJ)

Doximity places Cincinnati as highest, is that true? How do the reputations of Temple, Maryland, VCU, and Henry Ford compare? Thank you!

Any regional preferences? Your programs are all over the place.

1. Cincinnati v Maryland - cant really go wrong here
3. Temple
4. VCU
5. Drexel
6. Henry Ford
7. Rutgers

I'm originally from Pennsylvania so I'd like to stay somewhat nearby, but location is lower down than reputation and clinical training to me.

Interesting, you rank Maryland higher than Temple and the others? In that case, I like the list you propose, thank you!

Up until Drexel, none of those programs will hold you back from cardiology. It'll be easiest obviously from the top three, but all put over 4-5 residents per year into cardio. Go with what fits you best!

UNM should be above Northshore and arguable over San Antonio too - its a solid program. Otherwise looks fine

Default Help me with my ROL, please!

Hello,
I'm having trouble ranking the following programs...

Indiana University
Loyola
U of Rochester/Strong
U Southern California
U of Illinois in Chicago

Although location does matter to me somewhat, I'm more interested in what you guys think of these programs regardless of their location. For fellowship I think I want to do Hemonc.

Thanks so much!

Briefly about me:
AMG from a state university
No redflags on my transcript; No AOA or GHS status; Some research experience but no publications; Nothing remarkable on my extracurriculars other than hobbies, really
Step1 241/ CK 245/ CS pass

Wow! Congrats on some seriously great invites!

I have a cousin who just went through the program at USC, he loved it and matched into a great academic program for cards! USC will get you into any fellowship in a great place and they treat their residents really well, they give like $50/day for food. They also have a reputation for diverse pathology and of course great weather, it is southern California!

1. USC
2. Indiana - probably the best overall on your list but Indianapolis is no LA
3. Loyola - Less competition for pathology in suburbs, UIC is up against Cook County, Rush, UChicago, and Northwestern/McGaw plus lower cost of living but Chicago is right there
4. UIC
5. Rochester - don't know too much about except that they match really well into Heme/Onc

Wish you the best and hope you get your top choice!

Pull union memorial up... switch einstein philly and florida hospital (maybe). Downstate - Reputation of being very busy (which may be good or bad depending on what you want)
If you could give your input on presence st francis vs union memorial vs florida hospital

Florida is the best among them in terms of location. Others have the advantage of being older and more established programs maybe. You can get good fellowship from all three places. Thinking of switching Florida and downstate though. Majority of my programs have good fellowship placements.

Cleveland Clinic Florida is a smaller program but still part of the CC brand and it's name recognition will help with fellowship opportunities.

That being said I wouldn't rank it above Cleveland Clinic Ohio unless you had a very compelling reason for doing so.

Please help me rank these programs. I want to do a fellowship, no geographic preference, will we happy with J1 but will prefer an H1b visa. I am enlisting my program in the order I interviewed.

1) St Luke's Hospital, St Louis, MO.
2) Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, NJ
3) Morehouse School of Medicine/Grady Health System, Atlanta, GA
4) Charleston Area Medical Center/West Virginia University, Charleston, WV
5) Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI
6) Seton Hall - Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine/ St Francis Medical Center, Trenton, NJ
7) Florida State University/Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, FL
8) State University of New York at Brooklyn/ SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY
9) Howard University, Washington DC
10) Orange Park Medical Center, Orange Park, FL

Your input is highly appreciated.

UT Houston > Ohio >>> florida

rationale
UT houston is a university program .. opportunities to rotate in MDACC and texas heart...Level 1 trauma center and more hands on training than the clinic...

CC-Florida cannot be remotely compared with the 2...

Someone asked about similar programs recently.

Great list! I'm sure either program will be excellent for the purposes of getting you into GI and I think visa issues may to turn out to be more important than anything else if you don't have US citizenship or a green card.

VCU, St Louis and Kansas City all have 4 in-house GI fellowships. The other 3 have it as well, which is good, but 3 or less position. In general the more positions a program has the more likely they are to take someone in-house. This is especially important for GI.

1. VCU - Richmond is a great city
2. Kansas City
3. St Louis
4. Cleveland Clinic
5. UT Houston
6. Houston Methodist (great program but university programs tend to be better received than community programs)

You have six really excellent options. I think either of the six can work for you! "Trust your gut" and best of luck!

all options will get you GI

VCU- Excellent liver research...particularly NASH...

UT-Houston- MDACC for GI oncology...do advanced GI...Match superb...got some excellent faculty.

U. Kansas-- top class esophagus faculty..radiofrequency ablation of barretts esophagus was pioneered here....

cleveland clinic...GI fellowship is great... IM training not so much...no trauma center...a community program but matches really well ...the above 3 options provide more well rounded training being university programs..

SLU- great program ...but dwarfed by WashU being in the same city...

Houston methodist : similar to cleveland clinic..a community program housed in a top class hospital that is fellow driven...IM training is not necessarily well rounded..

Thanks in advance.
Rank the programs with their own GI fellowship in the order you like them. Chances are you won't be matching in GI anywhere else, unless they have an in house fellowship or you do brilliant research while in residency

Thank you for your feedback. I agree that UT-Houston, U. Kansas and SLU are great choices for a good training and GI.
I feel like Cleveland Clinic is a bit underrated as an Internal Medicine program. I understand that it is a community program but they have a great fellowship match and it looked like residents were happy with the training. It probably has to do with the fact that academic programs are more valued but I thought that CCF would compare to Indiana University and University of Iowa in the midwest. What do you think ?

Thanks for your input. What would be your suggestion, regarding ROL if I do Pulm/CC, Hem/Onc or ID?

What I meant is that the setup was similar to ccf. Ie Houston Methodist and ccf were both programs in a large private hospital with all facilities you can think of. One of the pitfalls of comparing match rates is geography. Someone from Texas would prefer matching in fellowship in the south. Someone from Ohio would prefer Midwest and northeast .

the opportunity to go to a prestigious amg program should not be missed..it opens a lot of doors...in your case VCU is certainly the best program u have. seriously don't miss the opportunity to go there..other programs are adjustable as per personal preference ...

Agreed. You have them perfect.

Downstate and Missouri are interchangeable go with the one that you feel was the best fit for you.

Howard at 3 and Queens at 4 is how your order should be.

Even the "bad" lists are enough to make IMGs drool. haha.

Way too many people contemplating over MGH vs Hopkins. It's all a bit pretentious and sickening.

AMG problems, my friend. They're in their own bubble - blissfully unaware of anything that isnt ranked in the top 30.

some of it is quite hilarious ... someone wanted to rank hopkins(or some other program) a bit lower as she did not encounter residents with babies on the interview day...

some posts are actually quite informative though..its good to keep a perspective about the world...

mercy hospial should be number 5 unless u absolutely liked it...rest are interchangeable ... based on prestige (as perceived by an AMG) the order would be Neb / Mizzou/CCF/SLU/Mercy....but to be frank any order based on location is fine as pulm crit fellowship is easier to obtain....cleveland is the better place for singles...Mizzou is in a college town...Omaha is a large midwestern city if u like the type..saint louis is a decent place to stay...

Why is Mercy so high?

I'd rank them:
1. CCF
2/3/4 interchangeable, trust your gut
5. Mercy Hospital (unless you have a compelling reason for ranking it higher)

4 of your programs are very strong!

If you're an IMG you really should go to a program with an in house GI fellowship as that is where you are most likely to match. That same rule holds true even for AMGs.

1. Einstein Philly has GI in house, Mount Sinai Miami Beach does not. +10 Einstein
2. Cook County has GI in house, Jacobi does not. +10 CC

I don't think any of the other programs have it. So you'll have to go based off their historical matches.

I'd recommend:
1. Einstein Philly
2. Cook County (Very busy program)
3. Mount Sinai Miami Beach (Miami is a lot nicer than the Bronx)
4. Jacobi
5-8 go with the programs that have historically matched best to GI

Reallyyyy thank you so much! I have also read that I should prioritize programs with a GI fellowship. I am an IMG. But, what if I just would want to stay as an internist... how should I rank them???

Any of them will make you an internist. Go with the program you like the most in that case.

I know where I'd be going if I were you, Miami Beach. It's hard to argue with Miami.

Hey everyone, I could use some help ranking these programs as there seems to be less information available about some of them. Don't want to close the door on fellowship opportunities, but somewhat interested in primary care. I don't know how much importance I should be placing on in-house fellowships (middle 3). Here's my current order.

Penn Hospital
Lankenau Medical Center
Washington Hospital Center
Baystate Medical Center
St. Agnes Hospital
