Default My Match Experience 2017, Alhamdulillah

Alhamdulillah I will start residency for categorical position in IM from 2017.
My creds:
Step1: 245
Ck : 244
Step3 233
CS: passed in first time
Research: 2 years exp with 2 pubs and 4 posters
3 months observer and 3 months externship
Green card holder

This is my second Match. I will first write difference of my CV between this and last match.
Last Match:
No step3
No externship
Need visa
Applied 134 prog from Match A resident
Got 1 IV
Unmatched

This Match:
Step3 passed
Externship for 3 months
No visa
Applied 112 Prog searched by myself using freida and program website
Got 11 IV, one in Pedi, 10 in IM.
Accepted prematch

Now I will write in details. Being unmatched last year, I really felt dishearted, specially when I saw people with my credentials matched, even people with less credentials matched. I then stood up, started preparing for next match. I did externship in a teaching hospital which helped to build my CV. By this time I got my GC, which is really plus as half of my interviews are from places that does not sponsor visa. Step 3 is a big plus too.

USMLE steps: scores are first to come always. Dont rush, take time, Score as high as you can, at least more than 250. Old graduates like me should target 260. But if you cant, its not the end, then make your CV strong with other things. I studied by myself. This forum helped me a lot. I knew the materials and others experience here. I did not take any course like kaplan or anything for steps. CS was most difficult for me. I practiced with a partner over skype for about 2 months, again no courses. My biggest problem was my typing speed. Thats why I did not do well in ICE. But still passed.

YOG: very imp to apply within 2 YOG. I was 8 YOG, with continuous expetience in my country. so filtered out most of programs. But like some people think its impossible to match after 5 YOG, I disagree. I know doctors who are 20 YOG, matched. They had vast clinical exp back home with amazing scores.

Visa: visa is big no for old IMG. I got half of my interviews from places that does not sponsor visa, even programs that sponsor visa also prefer candidates who dont need visa. Actually I got the EAD during application, if you are sure to get GC, you can write GC holder, as holder makes huge difference to get IV. I got my Green card in hand few days back.

USCE: first I shadowed 2 known doctors from my country. Then after Ecfmg certification, I was able to apply for observerships in teaching hosp and accepted in one hospital. You will find information in programs website for observership or externships which is really time consuming but rewarding if you get it. I have no idea about private companies.

LOR: I used 2 LOR from USCE and 1 from my home country and 1 from other country where I did research.

Research: I am not sure is it helpful or not. I had 2 publications and 4 posters in neuroscience.

Connections: I think connection is only helpful if that is strong one like attending level. I had many known one from my country, but did not help to get IV. Again if you get IV from connections, its only your credentials that will make you to match, not the connection.

Program searching: do it by yourself using freida and programs website. Dont use Match A resident or others. Last year I used match A resident which was my big fault. It takes around 15-20 days to search programs in freida for IM. There are about 410 programs.Make excel sheet for programs with Yog, visa, score etc.

Apply: apply as soon as possible. I got most of my interviews on october. So if you apply after October it might be too late. Again some prog start later, so its possible even if you are late.

Interviews: I attended all of my interviews except the Pedi and one IM that I got after taking prematch. I had 2 uni prog, where we attended morning report, noon conference, had breakfast and lunch, had city tour, hosp tour, preinterview dinner. Preinterview dinner, you can relax. Its only the residents who will be in dinner. You can have informations about prog in dinner, just be in yourself. Interview ques were really like normal chitchat in those two, they did not ask any medical ques. But my other IV are in community programs, some of them asked medical ques, but not that difficult one. Others asked FAQs. Always arrive at least 30 mins earlier. I met doctors of different country and made friends during the season. Most prog had 2 interviews, one with a faculty and other with PD.
I have practiced interview with one partner for 3-4 sessions, but you have to attend 2-3 IV to become perfect, so schedule your imp IVs after that. Also try to schedule IVs close dates in same area. I was really tired of travelling.

Thank you letter: i have sent thank you email the day after interview to all who interviewed me, also to the residents who gave us tour.

Prematch or Match: its really upto you. I liked the program where I took prematch. Though I had confusion what to do. Also Being unmatched last year, I did not have courage to refuse it.

I hope my experience would help you guys. In few words, score and visa are the most imp to get IVs. If you have any ques please feel free to ask me. Dont be upset of you dont match this year, I know the feelings. Keep trying, you will match by the Grace of Almighty. Good luck to all who are waiting for match.Alhamdulillah I am now so happy.

@bird congrats with 10 IV why did you not go the match route? You have a very good shot to match otherwise also? Just curious was it not matching last year and the guarantee?

Thanks, I was surprised too for the first time, really broken in last match, but did not give up.

Actually I got the prematch IV after attending all of my interviews, to me other programs are almost same, so did not want to take risk for Match. Even the prematch one is better as it has in house fellowship, though more workload. But I am from a country where I am well trained for huge workload.

I see you people praying here, which is good. Can anyone explain to me after my search this year of Frieda of programs and current residents and experience, I noticed: Muslin will take Muslim, Jewish will take Jewish, Indian will take Indian and Chinese will take Chinese. Why Christians do not take Christians?
