any suggestions for an unmatched applicant on what to do next ??? would step 3 help to improve my cv ?

Yes it will. A senior resident from internal medicine strongly encouraged me to make it before entering to the residency. Programs will look at candidates who are done with it (and of course with competitive scores would be better) because preparing the step during the residency is not going to distract the resident. Indeed, some programs state that you as IMG need to pass it before starting as a requirement. It does really matter but of course it is not the whole thing to give you the position.

Are you sure about that? I went on over 15 interviews, and my general experience was that Program Directors did not care much about Step 3, and it seemed of very low importance, because it's generally easy and everyone passes it anyways. They expressed that it was more in the interest of the applicant, so they had more visa options.

Just curious on your research/volunteer experience? Also I do think taking Step three is not a bad idea, if anything it will show your dedication and a great score could be a nice added bonus. Also, consider working in/near a place where you applied, that could help build rapport and allow you to get a letter of recommendation from some of the staff.
