Does ECFMG not certified by the time of application affect dramatically the odds of IV. Anybody?

It shouldn't. You can't have ECFMG certification until you have diploma in hand, and most IMGs (or AMGs) graduating this year don't have their diploma yet at time of application. Most programs realize this and will require it by start of program, some require it by submission of their rank order list, and as far as I know there are only a few that actually require it at time of application.

I wouldn't say dramatically, but it is something you want to get ASAP. Programs don't want to waste an interview on someone who for whatever reason might not be be able to get the certificate in time for starting residency.

  • Provide a Statement of Need form the Ministry of Health of the country of most recent legal permanent residence, regardless of country of citizenship. This statement provides written assurance that the country needs physicians trained in the proposed specialty and/or subspecialty. It also serves to confirm the applicant physician’s commitment to return to that country upon completion of training in the United States, as required by Section 212 (e) of the immigration and Nationality Act as amended

Didn't apply to that program because of that.

Hey my husband says that form you mentioned is for J1 visa and we will have to submit it to our home country, irrespective of the institution..

And we will have to do it later, when we join and the institutes start the visa related paper work. And he says that process is not cumbersome. Please let me know if this is different from what you mentioned

This is referring to the necessary documentation to get a J1 Visa, it does not have to be completed to get an interview, but rather after the match before commencing work.

That is not necessary for the J1 from what I'm reading. The reason you'll have to return to your country is because it's probably on some bullshit list in the US government website. I don't think you actually need that statement from your government, perhaps someone could confirm this to us. This is the minimum you need for it:

  • DS-2019 Form, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status
  • DS-7002 Form, A Training/Internship Placement Plan (for exchange visitor trainees or intern visa applicants)
  • Form DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application
  • A passport valid for travel to the U.S with validity six months after the intended period of stay in the US
  • One 2x2 photograph
It could vary from country to country though I guess.

Yup.... I went from... "Is my application any good at all?? to: "I'm happy even if I don't match and have to scramble" haha. I'm so nervous about that interview though.

Does anyone feel like the interviews are slow to come this year? At this time last year, people had ~8-10 interviews. Should we be worried ? Also, my school still hasn?t uploaded the MSPEs....

I second that. Even I was seeing the last year thread and felt that ppl got IVs from most of the IMG friendly programs by now.

Definitely... my theory is that everyone saw how well people matched in the 2016 charting outcomes and thus this year there are many more people applying gas (the data wouldn't have been available in time for people to change their specialty for the 2017 match).

Also I don't know if this is just random selection variance, but it seems IMGs have way higher scores this year. Looking at the USMLE-forum anesthesiology IMG threads from the last few years, almost every year I would have been top 3 for board scores out of the 10-15 people in the thread. This year like every single applicant is 240+ step1 & 2 with many ppl in 250+ range even. A bit stress-inducing this year for sure, hopefully everything will still work out in the end though.

I definitely agree. Everyone?s scores this year are through the roof, making Anesthesiology a very competitive specialty. I fear that if we don?t get anymore interviews by the end of the week (already mid-October), we might have to settle for what we have...

Check out the 2015 thread, people have much lower scores overall, and they also had around the same or slightly less interviews at the same date compared to us. Nobody in 2015 had more than 3 interviews by this time, even those with very strong scores. However, in the 2017 thread there were multiple people with 6-7 interviews by October 10th already. I didn't bother with the 2016 thread, because those guys didn't have their act together to post a consolidated table to interpret

It seems odd not to have any interviews this late with your decent scores. I'd consider a few things:

Was your application complete early in the cycle? No really late LoRs, MSPE, or step results or anything?

Any chance somebody wrote something unflattering in one of your LoRs that you didn't read? That can torpedo an application pretty quickly.

Any other red flags? Failed step attempt, failed rotation, received any disciplinary action while in medical school, time off during medical school etc.

From your previous post I see you graduated medical school in 2011. Consider what you have been doing since then. This long after graduation programs will want to see you have been working in a clinical environment since your graduation in the field of anesthesiology in your home country. If you have been training in a different specialty or have been only doing research and not working in a clinical capacity for that time this can be seen as a deal breaker by many programs.

Hopefully you may still receive a couple late offers, but to be honest it would be a bit worrisome to not have any interviews at this point. Best of luck, and hope you hear some good news.

Thank you In2b8. The only known red flags are my YOG 2011(nevertheless I have had 3 yr of experience with OR exposure)and the fact I am not USMLE certified coz I didn't take cs yet. All my 4 LOR have been written by physicians who know me and with whom I work. I am very worried right now! Anyway I try to keep hope?

If you haven't even taken the CS yet that could definitely be a big cause for not receiving invites. I thought you were just waiting for your score to be released shortly, but if you haven't even sat the 2CS yet as an IMG, unfortunately very few programs will consider the application.

On the bright side, this means that the lack of response isn't because your application is uncompetitive (which could be a difficult thing to remedy) but merely that it is incomplete, and once you have the 2CS result you could reapply next year and hopefully get some interviews. Sorry about your situation Rhodopsin, I know how discouraging it must be.

Actually, even if he had taken CS already, it would still be a dealbreaker. It is very important for programs to invite IMGs only after CS has been passed, it has a huge fail rate for FMGs (almost 30%) and if you fail it, not only it means you probably lack "clinical skills", but also that you can't retake it in time to have a pass available for the match.

Yes it has been. Hopefully it continues!! And congrats to you too.. you and thatuswhat are killing it I hope you guys hear from better programs like Ohio, NY..
Till when can we expect interviews. I was presuming in the first 2 weeks of October we will have maximum IVs.. but I guess we haven?t heard from the most IMG friendly programs in Newyork, Michigan, Chicago etc.. do we still have time?

Till when can we expect interviews. I was presuming in the first 2 weeks of October we will have maximum IVs.. but I guess we haven?t heard from the most IMG friendly programs in Newyork, Michigan, Chicago etc.. do we still have time?
I got 6 IV since October 1st, so can't say I'm disappointed. But next week everyone will have their MSPEs out, so expect some excitement really soon!

At Chicago now. Came to IV at advocate Illinois Masonic.. just finished dinner with residents.
My thoughts so far:
Looks like a small program, the residents appear very relaxed. They mainly do routine cases. Kind of was surprised when they said they don?t do transplants. Only cardiac they said they do good cases..
Will post again tomo after IV

Me too, but I think CCF-F is probably going to be a really good program, even though it's new (if it has any semblance to CCF-O, which I think it does). New programs are risky, but imo also the best chance for us IMGs to get higher quality training. All the good programs are already getting flooded with great AMGs apps, so the good new ones that noone knows about yet will give us interviews.

True.. but let?s hope we hear more. Somehow my impression after speaking to residents here was that I would not rank this program high .

Rejection from Mayo Clinic Rochester. Not too surprising, but thought I had a slim chance. Hopefully this week turns out well for everyone!

You are looking at things the wrong way, Mayo rejected you, invited others => someone cancels their interview somewhere else => you get more interviews. The bright side of rejections!

Hey everyone! Sorry, I haven't checked the thread in a while. I also got rejections from Stony Brook and Mayo Rochester. However, I got IVs from John Stroger and Kendall Regional. Congrats to everyone on the news interviews! Great job suuuunny on getting SUNY Downstate. I am praying for an IV from there. However, my university STILL hasn't uploaded my MSPE. I think this is really affecting my prospects. What do you guys think?

Been pretty quiet for prelims, have 1 medicine prelim so far... did not apply to TY or surg prelims (Surg prelims are fairly easy to get in the SOAP, there are like 500 that go unmatched every year). I only applied to 32 med prelims, and then added 12 more later when i didnt get much response, mostly low-tier and a few mid-tier programs. Now wishing I would have just applied really broadly to like 100 med prelims right from the start. I have a few advanced anesthesia interviews that are pretty attractive but the prospect of not matching med prelim and having to do a brutal surg prelim year with an extra move after intern year is not so attractive. I heard TY are very competitive and rarely take IMGs so didn't bother applying to those.

I think it could be definitely affecting it somewhat, not sure to what extent though. There are some programs that send invites early before MSPEs even get released, or simply don't care about seeing the MSPE in advance, but some other programs will not send out invites unless your application is complete with the MSPE. I'd really get on your school to get the MSPE submitted ASAP at this point.

Congratulations, could you share a few more details regarding your app? Yog, research in the US? Did you do 5 months of USCE or 0.5 months?
