I got offered a cardiology 2-year NIH-funded research fellowship at mayo clinic. I was originally planning on applying to this year's match.

Credentials for reference:
- graduation date: 2011
- step 1 228
- CS pass 1st time
- CK in 10 days
- US citizenship
- 2 months USCE with 2 LoR
- 9 months so far -and continuing- doing research in cardiology at Mayo with a LoR

You think I should go for it? Or should I just go ahead with residency?

Putting in mind "recent graduate" status, future cardiology fellowship competitiveness, and the fact that I am entering this year's match late because of the September 25 score delay.

You are in decent shape, apply this year and try. Worst case you wont get anything and u will continue your research.

I'm not too scared of not matching. It's more a matter of "where" I will match rather than "if" I will match. So I'm not sure if this will make that much of a difference and get me into a better and well-established program.

So my question is, is it worth it?!

I can't continue my research unless through this fellowship. After one year you have to find get funding to continue. So it's an either/or situation (either I apply to the match, or do this fellowship).
