Default Number of interview question

Hi all,
I received an interview from a program in NYC and I just found out they ask all their applicants “how many interviews do you
have?” I know many people advise to play it coy and not answer directly. This is my only interview and I was planning to answer in all honestly that and truthfully it’s a program where I wanna be not just because it’s my only choice. My thought process is that they wanna know how highly you’re gonna rank them since most IMGs with a lot of ivs won’t rank NYC highly considering most programs are community programs with crazy workload. Could it be they wanna know how competitive of an applicant I am? And since I have only
one means not much. Should I lie and say I have more than one iv?
I would appreciate your input on this. Thanks

for me i will advice not to lie but not to tell the truth. i will play it coy. saying you have one can go either way. they might pity you and want to rank you high or they might see you as a less competitive applicant and start to wonder why you have 1. i will say, you should smile and say a few and that you were highly selective of this process and applied to programs that had the qualities you wanted, could see your self growing academically and being happy and their program is one of them. play the game

Yes I agree with this. If I were a PD, why would I rank highly an applicant with 1 IV? Is there a red flag other programs found while I didn't? I would rather rank an applicant with 10 IV. According to a survey for PDs, perceived interests in the program is one of the less important factors in determining ROL.

But that does not mean you have to tell the truth. You could say I'm fortunate to be interviewed in great places, but I really like this program due to X and Y factors.

Dont lie, they can know who is lying because they will be seeing candidates from many years. They dont spare if they recognize the applicant is lying. Try to give answer so that they can rank you.
