Default why didn't i match?

-228 step 1
-240 ck
-cs pass
-all first attempt
-had all my scores out even before september
-2018 graduate
-carib med student (all 3rd and 4th year/clinical rotations done in the states and canada)
-all LORs from states and canada

-applied to 247 programs (psych + IM + FM)

my first question is why did i only get 3 IVS ( 1 psych and 2 IM; the psych IV was even thru a connection)

my 2nd question is why i didn't match?

I have step 1: 228 and step 2: 237. YOG 2015, IMG, 2 pubs and 4 clinical experiences. The only difference is I have a GC. I had 5 IVs last year but I did not match. This year I had 6 IVs in IM, 1 prelim, and 1 FM. Applied to 120 programs.
What I learned is you really need to keep emailing programs for interviews. I sent 6 emails to one program, after every 2 weeks and then they sent me an IV. Secondly need to prepare for every interview individually, read the faculty's research work, what they are interested in and discuss that. You need to connect with the people interviewing you. Show that you are interested in their program specifically. Thirdly to not be nervous at all and highlight your strengths outside of medicine as well. This year I added research work only because I could not give step3. In my very naive opinion, you could do well in step 3, add some research work and keep doing clinical work to match next year. Good luck and I am sure you will match next year

2 people I know matched IM with lower scores. One had a step 2 failure which carib school did you attend.

I only applied to programs that sponsor j1 visas and programs that are IMGs friendly. I still donít get what went wrong.

What I don't understand is the amount of interviews, Have a professional writer look at your personnel statement.

Yes I was expecting around 7 ivs.

I donít think my PS is a problem because my school proofread for me and edited it.

If I got 2 ivs this year without connection, then I will do step 3, and maybe that will double up my ivs next year and get me 4, and hopefully I match with 4.

Having step 3 done and that ecfmg certificate at the time of application is a major improvement. Criteria concerning the ecfmg certificate varies from program to program, but some clearly state on their page they won't bother ranking/interviewing if you don't have one. Get those done, write a stellar personal statement for each speciality, have people look at overall application, and apply broadly. I think you will get 5+ interviews next year!

Thanks for the advice.

Even though I remember I only applied to programs that didnít require ecfmg at time of application. I also did apply broadly from north east to south to Midwest.

Exactly, you'll have more programs this time around to apply to and more favored over other applicants that don't have a "complete" application. I was in your position last year with 2 invites (1 through contact) and didn't match. I got step 3 done, applied all over and got 12 invites this time.

Step-3 score is useful for increasing the chances for match, failing score during the application season would be far more damaging than not having the score.
Try to apply for hands-on clinical expeirence in the US. It will be helpful for the application and will also provide strong LORs.

Also, I would contact your school to see if you can extend your graduation date. It will look better on paper to have a 2019 rather than 2018.

Hahah good one! But honestly I donít think my school will agree! To be honest graduating in Jan 2018 is not that bad if am applying for 2019 match, by the time I go to ivs in October and November it will be only 10 months long which is not a big deal

You're really good on paper, but how were your interviews and interpersonal skills? Sometimes we think we did great but we still need some improvement with this part.
Not trying to criticize, but maybe you didn't do very well in person?
It's worth the thought.

One iv I actually thought I did good.
The other iv I should have shown more interest in the program which I didnít, I was just waiting for their questions, but they too were just waiting if I have questions.
The last iv I also did good ( but I was told they prefer applicants who did step 3) which makes sense why I didnít match there. This iv was through the contact

You need to find a way to do some research and get some abstracts, papers, posters/conferences published. You are an average applicant with no research. Start sending out emails to residents, attendings and see if one of them will take you under their wing and let you be a full time researcher for this next cycle. Hopefully you can get some pubs/posters/oral presentations before September!

IMO, I believe the problem is you applied to 247 programs in 3 DIFFERENT specialties. How many apps went to IM, FM and Psych specifically?

You should of focused on one and applied to 247 programs in ONE specialty not divided amongst 3. This would of yielded you at least 6-8 interviews in that one specialty.

Totally agree with you, I am actually thinking of applying to just internal medicine for next match.

I applied to about 100 int med
100 psych
And 47 family

Yes, I strongly suggest that you do that. This is the answer to your question: you really only applied to 100 programs, which is very little for an IMG with avg scores.

In addition, your ROL essentially only had 2 programs and 1 program, b/c inorder for you to say you have a ROL of 3, the 3 interviews must be CONTIGOUS rankings (of the same specialty). I hope that makes some sense.

For anyone else reading in prep for next years match, be sure to apply to >150 programs in EACH specialty you are considering.
