Default Work or research?

I'm an IMG from India, done with step 1 and step 2 CS and have three months of clinical experience in the US and I graduated this year. I won't be applying for match this year as I won't be having my step 2 CK scores by the deadline and won't be ECFMG certified. There is about one year between now and next year's application and I'm confused whether I should work in my home country and try to get some research study done or to apply for observerships/research in the US. Given that getting a position for research in the US is difficult, which path can improve my chances of matching next year (peds)?

Research is going to be worthless for IM or FM or even in pediatrics (in this one I am not certain). If I were you I would be applying for a residency in my home country while covid and Trump are gone, a residency that matches your choice in the ERAS.

The best shot is getting US clinical experience hands-on in someway, but since immigration is so difficult these times and with this administration you better stop thinking of them.
