Given that getting a position for research in the US is difficult, which path can improve my chances of matching next year (peds)?

Research is going to be worthless for IM or FM or even in pediatrics (in this one I am not certain). If I were you I would be applying for a residency in my home country while covid and Trump are gone, a residency that matches your choice in the ERAS.
The best shot is getting US clinical experience hands-on in someway, but since immigration is so difficult these times and with this administration you better stop thinking of them.
