J1 Visa J-1 problem

Here is a little complex problem. I hope those with a J-1 visa and similar situation would be able to answer.

I intend to do residency on J-1 visa. In 2010 (July), I got a J-1 visa to do a fellowship in the US for 1 year (unrelated to ECFMG). I completed my fellowship on July, 2011 and came back to my own country. That's one year (July, 2010- July 2011) in the US. I was on a J-1 Research Scholar visa. From what I heard, one can not get switch from one J-1 to another J-1- there is a wait period of 2 years between two J-1 visas!

Given, I get a residency spot on this year's (2012) match and offered a J-1 visa (ECFMG sponsored), can I apply for the visa? Please, note I would not have passed the "2 year in between" rule by then, i.e., J-1 completed on July 2011, so on July, 2013 my two year period would be over.

Can I apply for a J-1 before July, 2013?

You'd probably get away with this issue if the residency program allows you to start the residency a little late, like August 2013.

That's possible and not unheard of, you just need to negotiate with the program appropriately and carefully.

However, there's a problem here, I think you still have to go back to your country for two years after finishing this new J1 Visa, though am not sure of this.

Other members please your opinion on this.

so the repeat participation clause u are talking about doesn't apply to medical exchange students..
This applies to research scholars/professors only so i think u should be ok.
But u will be included in the home residency clause for J1.
