I have sent my applications to chosen schools via ERAS, however, I only selected "categorical" positions but now would like to add preliminary as well. I have checked the preliminary box under "Programs applied to" and clicked save, however, my question is – do programs get this updated...
Is it a good thing to apply to both preliminary and categorical positions at the same hospital? I have asked around but I have got mixed opinions about this. So, it would be really great it anyone can clarify that.

I am applying to Neurology both advanced and preliminary programs. I have a doubt that, while applying for preliminary medicine program, should we assign personal statement of Neurology or separate medicine PS is needed. Also, about LORs, do we have to assign neuro or medicine...
many of excellent internal medicine programs require at least one year US clinical experience (like Vanderbilt program). Can I apply to a preliminary year in IM then apply to categorical IM next year to a good program.

Is it recommended to apply to both a preliminary position and categorical position in the same program? If you don't get a categorical spot, can you apply for the preliminary spot, or would that work against you? Or if you don't get categorical do they automatically offer you preliminary?
My target is IM residency
If I choose prelim in addition to categorical

Some say it s more competitive
Some say u ll have to start a 3 yr residency again after that
But it s better than nothing and maybe one or two places will be free?

From I what got from the experiences of people in previous matches, when it comes to IM, it is NOT advised to apply to both prelim and categorical in the same program, but for surgery it is actually ADVISABLE to do so..

Assuming one applies for Prelim surgery as a road to Anesthesiology, do they apply for Prelim Surgery and CA-1 during the same match cycle or apply (and match of course) into prelim surgery, and then apply next year for CA-1?
