I am applying for my first examination through IWA.

I am currently a student.
My med school is in IMED and must be part of EMSWP (as the online application took me only to form 186, not 183).
I have printed off form 186 and will take it to my med school in the next few days (I have applied for 1 April - 30 June).

What are the next steps I must take?

1. Have Form 186 signed and certified by my med school
2. Have my Med School send 186 directly to ECFMG from their office (not by me)
- Does my med school need to attach ANY OTHER DOCUMENTS to this form?
- Do I need to provide any other documents to form 186
?
- Will the ECFMG be sending my medical school anything in the post?

3. Wait for ECFMG to email me that they have received 186 and have processed it.
4. Wait for my med school to verify my status through EMSWP
5. Wait for ECFMG to say I am certified and have been allocated a time period for exam
6. go to Prometric website to book exam

Is that all I need to do? Have I missed anything out? My med school has not done many of these before (not many people from England really bother to go to US for medicine) so if there are any steps involved for my med school that I have missed out, then please tell me so I can let them know and it does not delay my exam!

Many thanks for your help.

Yes, you did not miss

That's pretty much it.

You did not miss any step.

I just want to reconfirm to you that as long as your med school participates in the EMSWP they don't need to send any physical documents other than Form 186, all other correspondence is done electronically.

Just a few more questions -

1. Once my medical school has sent form 186 to the ECFMG, how long before they can go on EMSWP and verify my status? Can they send the form and then do EMSWP straight away, or do they need to wait for ECFMG to process my form 186 first, before they log onto EMSWP?

2. On the page where you print off form 186, it says:

"the following must be sent to the ECFMG:

1. Form 186
2. if applicable, two copies of official transcript......... [NOT APPLICABLE TO ME]
3. Any addition documents required to complete your application
4. A complete IWA document submission form (form 187) if in addition to form 186 there are any additional documents required to complete your application.

How do I know if any additional documents are required to complete my application? At the bottom of this page, it only has a link to form 186 so does that mean I do not need to provide any other documents?

I am trying to get this process completed as soon as possible as I have applied for the April window and do not want it to last months!

They can log in to the EMSWP at anytime and see if your Form 186 has been verified.

You don't need to send any other document since your school is participating in the EMSWP.

Thanks for your help so far. This forum is awesome.

I have logged into OASIS to check the progress of my application.

The ECFMG have received my Form 186 (I received an email saying so) and they said it may take 3 weeks to process.

In OASIS, it says:

"Processing Status: Waiting for Certification Statement/Certification of Identification Form"

Now what I want to know is this - does my medical school need to verify me on EMSWP before ECFMG process my Form 186, or do they process the form, and then ask my school to verify my identity? Ie. is the limiting factor right now 1) my medical school needing to verify me before ECFMG will do their next part, or 2) ECFMG just taking a while to process my form, and my medical school will have to verify me at a later date once ECFMG have done this?

My opinion

You med school can go ahead and do whatever they think is the next step in EMSWP system. The ECFMG should reply them with the right answer like by telling them "OK, we'll go ahead and certify Form 186" or "Please wait until we certify Form 186".

The idea of the EMSWP is take the headache off the applicant's shoulder and put it on the medical school itself. So you should ask your college to be more proactive and follow the case more frequently.
