Hey guys,

This is a great forum and it's highly informative and it is more organized than www.usmleforum.com and I'll be visiting here from now on

Now my question is:

I am an IMG and will be applying for both Dermatology and Internal Medicine.

Why am applying for IM? just a backup in case I fail in getting dermatology.

Obviously to apply for dermatology I have to apply for IM prelim.

Now, I noticed that many of the prelims that am applying for are the same programs (hospitals) that I want to apply for categorical IM? So if I apply to both the prelim and categorical .. am I going to be in trouble!!

Watch out

It depends on how strong is your profile for a Dermatolgy match.

If your profile is very strong for dermatology then I suggest you ignore the categorical IM programs that offer you a prelim at the same time and instead apply for their prelim year in preparation for your dermatology.

If your profile is not very strong for dermatology and you are not sure about it and you really want a good IM backup then in that case do not ruin those categorical programs by applying to their prelim. Just apply to the categorical.

Note that if you apply to both the prelim and the categorical IM in the same program/hospital, you are likely to be caught and they definitely will not like it and you may risk losing both applications.

I want to remind you also that both prelim and dermatology are extremely difficult and they one of the most difficult matches for IMGs like you.

American students apply for prelim to get their dermatology, radiology, anesthesiology, ..etc so an IM prelim is not an easy match to get unless you really have a great profile such as fresh graduation, double 99s, research, publications, and connections.
