It really breaks my heart as I write this but I just hope that someone atleast might benefit from this..

I appeared with my parents at the Islamabad embassy for my US visa and it was declined. The VO asked me to sit down while he interviewed my parents first. This is what they asked them :
why do you want to go to the US, how long willl you stay there, what do you do, prove your financial settlements, have you been to the US before...Then they called me and interviewed me alone. This is my conversation with the VO :

  1. Why do you want to go to the US? CS exam
  2. Have you been there before? Yes
  3. Why ? High school
  4. I believe you had a great experience! Do you talk to your friends often? Yes
  5. So what are your future plans? aiming for a residency
  6. What will you do when you come back to Pakistan? externship here and research
  7. I see you are not working for the past 6 months.WHY????!!!!!! I quit to study
  8. Really!!!!So you mean that you quit to study ??? For 6 months!!! ahhmmm..Yes, a lot of drs do that. USMLE is quite a competitive exam
  9. I have seen so many students working and studying for their steps?!! (sigh)
  10. You mentioned you know this person in the US.Who is that? How long have you known that person? (XYZ, for 20 years, family friend)
  11. Let me see your documents.
  12. Why the low usmle score? I was aiming for a higher score but well trying hard for my CK.
  13. What study materials do you use? KLN,uworld
  14. What residency will you aim for? Family medicine, the low score can suffice
  15. Where are your siblings? (xyz)
  16. How long have they been in those countries? (...... yrs.)
  17. Are you married? No
  18. Never married? Yup, never married.
  19. Give me a minute please.
  20. I have bad news maam..Sorry! I cannot determine at the moment that you have strong ties with your country and you might not return back from the US. (shocked!!!) Is there something I can do to get a visa as I will be reapplying.
  21. Change your circumstances.Good bye! (Tears!)
BLUNDERS I THINK I MADE AND PLEASE YOU DON'T DO IT:
* get an employment! Apply for the visa while you are working! Give them an assurity that you WILL return to your country.
* Mention that you will be living in a hotel rather than at someone's home.
* I don't know but maybe my "single" status would have been a negative factor too.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SUGGEST ME WHAT I SHOULD DO NOW!ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!! I am totally dishearted.Had my wedding in May and seems to be cancelled now.My fiance can't travel and if I don't travel either, it ends for us...I can't stop my tears.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE OUT THERE!

The new cables sent to all embassies and outposts of USA says that ECFMG requires students for step 2cs and embassies should not reject visas
I have seen the telegram myself
So dont lose hope they cant reject until they have a suspicion that you wont come back!
As they see you and parents are going and ur siblings are also in different countries so you have no social ties left in pakistan!
Also u dont have job here so why wud u come back!
So just clear there suspicions and u will surely get the visa

Can you tell me more about this telegram. When was this?
In my case scenario, I can't ask my bro and sis to leave their countries so what should I do about the SILLY SOCIAL TIES?! My plan is to get an employment, continue studying for CK (pls Allah give me power to do so), get the return ticket as you said, and get a hotel booking .Anything else?

Also I mentioned the name of my fiance when I said that that's where I am going to stay but I didn't say that he was my fiance ..Do you think that was stupid? Should I change that and this time go with a hotel booking saying that our family friends are out of state.Or should I reschedule CS at a different center now?
I feel for you!!! I went through the same stuff. In my case, I even had a job, my siblings and parents are here. The VO refused to see the bank statement and property documents. So how is he going to know my social ties if he won't look at my documents? This too was Islamabad embassy, about two months back. I haven't applied again yet and I really don't know what more to do. Some say its predecided, others say its pure luck, whatever it is, after so much effort, we don't deserve to be treated like this.

You are right! We don't deserve to be treated like this.We are looked at with such suspicion that God forbid we are some terrorists or something..It's quite upsetting!I am sorry to hear about what happened.I would tell you the same thing that please see an attorney.I will be doing that too. And also as bunny said, provide a return ticket, hotel booking, job leave certificate..have you taken your steps?

Yeah I am done with both step 1 and ck. I had an flight plan with me showing my return dates and all. But like I said, he didn't look at it, didn't even look at my score reports. He asked me if I had any documents that I believe will help him decide, so I presented him with score reports, visa support letter, cs booking, bank statement, job letter and whatever I could think of at that moment, he just looked at the visa letter and the job certificate, refused to look at anything else.

guys i have few Qs

doc-m mentioned one should
* get an employment! Apply for the visa while you are working! Give them an assurity that you WILL return to your country.i got it..i'am employeed
* Mention that you will be living in a hotel rather than at someone's home.
The main purpose of the interview is to let them have the impression that you dont know anyone there to depend on an you will return back to Pakistan! Thats it
Do whatever you can to make sure these two conditions are met!

Say them they are not close enough that you can ask an accomodation in their house

Damn! The guy already asked me that are you in touch with your high school friends and I said "yes"..He was like you had a great experience in the US,right? But I didn't seem excited about that and said "Well, I had a good experience". He also said that "So did your US high school help you into a med school?" I said, "Not really.YOu need good grades to get into medical school regardless of where you do your high school from". Hmmm..He didn't seem very happy with that but well that's true! I couldn't suck up to him saying that "I had a GREATT EXPERIENCE AND OH YES!MY AMERICAN EDUCATION HAS DONE ME WONDERS!"

But if she has already mentioned that she is going to live with her family friends .isn't this going to be like contradicting your own statement?

I am so sorry..All I can say is that,as bunny says, get an attorney ..discuss your case with him..and then reapply.

So many examples like you in Pakistan

I am posting just to let u know that there are so many unfortunate examples in Pakistan who r deprived of their rights by Islamabad embassy.
I applied for US B1/B2 visa in March 2011 after step1,I got refusal and was told to reapply after CK.When I reapplied in June 2001 after step 2 CK,I got refusal on grounds that I don't have strong social ties with my country.I got third refusal 1 month after wards on same grounds.

All three times I was doing job,had hotel booking and had a strong bank statement but those people don't bother to look at your documents. They look at ur face with such hatred and degradation that u feel so ashamed of coming to US embassy.
The only solution is to try and try again with status change and pray that any good human being should be sitting next time.

Regarding the US visa, there's no "one-size-fits-all" formula. It seems it's all down to one's luck, or perhaps depends on the mood of the VO at that time. I applied for the visa with only my step 1 score, but luckily got it(though it was issued after almost 4 months)...and the VO did not ask to look at a single document, not even my visa letter or CS exam permit. I have also seen many ppl mentioning relatives in the US and still getting the visa. In other cases, ppl having history of travel to the US with no visa violations, and seemingly strong strong social ties have been denied at times. And the worst cases are ppl who were accepted into residency programs and but got stuck during the visa status change process(visitor to J1 or H1).

In any case, one shud not lose hope. Keep trying until ur luck changes. May Allah help us all.

Thanks

Doc Mm,

First of all, a BIG thank you for sharing your story even in this period of grief. This discussion is going to help a lot of us. I am surely benefiting a lot from it. Secondly, I'd just like to put in my 2 cents about your emotional situation; I can very well comprehend how you are feeling right now; I got admitted at an Australian medical school & completed almost all the procedures but in the end I was refused a student visa for some absurd cause and then I had to lose a year & then started here in my home country. At that point of time, it felt like all my dreams had shattered & my whole life had fallen apart but it gradually faded as I settled in here, got back on track & found my best friend for life. Now I try to look at the brighter side & in ways feel that Allah actually protected me from some adverse circumstances that I couldn't foresee & allowed me to be there by family on a lot occasions. So please don't be too disheartened & just say to yourself that your intention/niyaat was good & Allah knows whats best for you :) Just concentrate now on what to do next and InshAllah, there will be a bright & happy future awaiting for you & your fiance :)
