It is all about timing your exams to get results in time for residency applications. Other than that, there is really no difference. Despite common myths, the test is the same for all applicants, whether you are an AMG or IMG. Also, you "compete" against the test NOT other applicants. What may be harder during this period is scheduling, especially if you are in the US, because it's around the same time US med students do Step 1. But if you schedule well in advance, there ia no problem with that either.

It all depends on you.
Are you the kind of person who can study all day most of the year?
Will you not be involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities?
Will your med school exams be similar to USMLE (concept based)?
Will you be allowed to take 1 month off med school for your final prep for step 1?
If the answer is yes to at least 2 of the above questions, then go ahead and prepare with full dedication and give your exam during a more relaxed year (e.g In India- 3rd year).
Else use the time now to do well in med school and build up a good CV. Maybe do some research, attend conferences, stuff like that. You can always study for the steps during internship or once you graduate
