Hello all,

I would like to share my experience with DLA Editors & Proofers. I think it can be really helpful for all those, like me, are indecisive about paying a substantial amount of money for their personal statement revision.

We all know about the importance of the Personal Statement, and how it plays a central role in our application. This is more so for those of us applying to Internal Medicine, where we have to prove through our experience and the way we convey them that we are reliable and good communicators.

After I reviewed some of the editing services stated in the poll above, I chose to purchase the services provided by DLA Editors for two reasons:
1) A good american friend pointed out to me that they were the only BBB accredited business that we could find; and that made it more reliable than other companies we looked at.
2) Secondly, I was persuaded about the personal approach offered by his founder, Mr. Lombardino.

After purchasing his services I received my edited version in 48hours. His team of editors changed several sentences to make it sound better, and fix several punctuation issues. But what it was more important to me, they pointed out two essential things I would've not seen otherwise.

First, they strongly suggested to add some information to a key incident (and essential in my PS) that I was describing and happened to me during my medical training.

Secondly, they pointed out a cliché I was writing about to justify a certain event in my life. I had read more than 30 or 40 "internal medicine" statements before doing mine, so is not like I was not aware of these clichés and common mistakes; and yet, I couldn't have seen these two problems on my statement and fix them without their help.

Finally, I would like to say that it is true that Mr. Lombardino, founder and CEO of this company, is very professional and diligent. He personally addressed my concerns and made sure I was satisfied with the final service I purchased.

I agree with you. We have limited budget and some websites require you to have first, second revision, not a complete version once you pay one time. Then does that also imply these editors are hiding some good points for second revision just for earning more money?

I feel that the best way to assess an editing service is to look at samples of their work. They will usually show in their website a sample of how a personal statement looked before they edited it and after they made changes to it.

When I read sample personal statements in some of these editing services' websites, I believe that many of what they write/edit are subpar. Sometimes, they just comment on this and that sentence or tell you to "go into more detail". These companies might not meet your expectations as they did not meet mine.

Some editing services I know especially the free ones from externship companies don't really edit your personal statement. I passed mine to an externship company and the guy there edited only two words. He just told me that it was a well-written PS. After I had my PS read by more reliable sources, I found out how wrong the content was (I didn't talk about me but more on about the professor that inspired me) and I had to overhaul and rewrite my PS. Be careful of these companies. They just use the "free CV and PS editing" to get students to avail of their services but the editing is inferior. I know a friend who had a similar experience in another externship company who offers free editing.

I also used to avail of the editing services of one of the popular companies in the poll above for my documents (not PS, but other ERAS documents). But after I realized that they edit only the grammar, just tell me to "add more detail", and in the end, just praise how strong my document was to make me feel satisfied, I stopped using their services.

To give a clearer picture, here is my experience in the aforementioned popular company: I passed a document to the company for editing and the guy keeps telling me to add more detail, so I ended up submitting it four or five times to him for further revisions. Finally, I asked a relative of mine take a look at my document. This is a relative who worked for ten years editing CVs for information technology applicants in Canada. After I saw how my relative edited my document to make it strong and stellar, I realized how poor the service I was getting and how I was wasting my money. I felt bad because I really trusted the company and I thought I was getting great service because he kept praising my document and kept telling me how outstanding my credentials are. I guess I fell for the flattery. Lol!!

Personal statement writing companies are a waste of money.

No one knows you better than you. You are the best person that can write a 'Personal statement' for you.

There's nothing wrong in sourcing for help, in regards to editing. But that's what your friends and neighbors are for. Don't underestimate them.

I ordered a statement for a fellowship on Aug 20 from cspersonalstatements.com, this guy Carl said he would have it in 3-5 days, I got the run around from almost a month and no personal statement .
Now he said he was in an accident and cannot complete the statement .

Worst personal statement

I paid to DLA editing for my personal statement, and my experience is horrible. They are just making IMG fool and getting money. No response if ask to change PS or if you do not like your PS edited. I will rate them "the worst". I will suggest future resident to get their PS edited by Nextgenedting company. They are the best.

I'm using residencypersonalstatements.net right now for my personal statement for my fellowship and so far they respond quickly, when I wasnt satisfied with the draft another writer was assigned, was edited and sent back for review ...they keep revising it until you are satisfied.

Best to avoid DLA

Thanks for a great chain, very useful information!
I used DLA per the recommendations of many of the earlier commentary and I appreciated the attentiveness that Mr. Lombardino gave to this chain. However, I obviously stopped reading the chain prematurely because I now see that others have experienced the same problem that i have, or possibly I was blinded by the early positive feedback.
Initially, I was impressed by their reasonable price and fast turnaround time as I was in a bit of a time crunch, however, what I did not realize was that it was a one-time edit and feedback ONLY. I attempted to email my editor for revision feedback and did not receive so much as an email back. Not only disrespectful to a client, but why would your employees/editors state that they could be contacted for further feedback and questions if that was not in fact the case!? I later went to the site only to realize that she likely did not respond because for a "second revision" (or feedback on the edited version) they charge the same full fee of $180!
Although a good preliminary edit, it was filled with a lot of empty guidance and recommendations. I am appalled at their business plan and lack of common courtesy. In my opinion, you'd be better off elsewhere
