It's a dilemma

It's a dilemma.
Some experts think that if you do the Step 1 first then your chances of getting a Visa for the CS is higher as they'll see that you are serious about it and not just wanting to get a Visa.
Some others say, get the Visa first before indulging into the painful paths of Step 1 and CK.
Certainly, the ECFMG letter is not enough to guarantee you a visa but it's very useful of course.

Most of the Indians that I have met, did Step 1 then applied for Visa for the CS and all of them got the Visa, so I suggest you follow the same path.

the way things go here in Egypt is that it doesn't make any difference whether you pass step 1 , 2 or both, still won't increase your chances of getting a visa,so if that's the deal in India also, then I'd recommend that you go ahead & try to get a visa first cause why would you start a thing that you can't finish. Good Luck

similar issue

hello,

i face a similar problem here. i am currently in my fourth year m.b.b.s from india. i am planning to pursue an elective in u.s next year, sometime bet sept-dec '11. i want to know how to proceed from then on.. can i give my step 2 ck first since ill be in u.s for the electives, then probably come back and study for the other exams? or is it better to give them in order? or should i finish my step1 before going for my electives and then give my step2cs? is there any specified time period for giving step2cs?how long does it take to prepare for step2cs ? will i be able to study during my last year [internship in india] ?please help.

have in mind the end first-residency!

we all need visa to be able to accomplish the final point: residency.
but remember that adequate preparation would give a higher score and then interviews and finally residency and your money spent pays off!!
i consider this the most important!
know that in journey of life there are risk taking involved. the biggest risk here i see is writing all the exam an not getting a residency.
to start with cs in my opinion is not the best! know that img as we are dont have good percentage pass incs in its self so why dont you get a good stance in your foundation to work out diagnosis in the cs. this makes you confident.

most often than not applicants after step 1 and ck would not be refused a visa.

remember that even if your fear is refusal of visa then how to do overcome that if you are given only 3 or 6 months visa to go for the cs and you dont get visa after 1 and ck then how would you go for the ivs?

so the truth is that, this whole processes is risk taking and for me as a christian my faith makes me know that i would not be disappointed at the end because i prayed to God's first to know whether i should really take the path of usmle.

if you are so convinced then please dont be afraid! i also need a visa but i know it would surely work out!!!
