The Clotting PIANO
- Thrombotic tendency as in (factor 5 leiden and antithrombin III deficiency)
- Cancer
- Pregnancy
- Injury to tissues (such as trauma and surgery) which releases tissue thromboplastin
- Advanced age
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Oral contraceptive pills
Hypercoagulable states are commonly tested in USMLE and it's one corner of the Virchow's triad together with endothelial injury and altered blood flow.
