The Clotting PIANO

  • Thrombotic tendency as in (factor 5 leiden and antithrombin III deficiency)
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Injury to tissues (such as trauma and surgery) which releases tissue thromboplastin
  • Advanced age
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Oral contraceptive pills

Hypercoagulable states are commonly tested in USMLE and it's one corner of the Virchow's triad together with endothelial injury and altered blood flow.
