So the oculomotor, abducens, and hypoglossal nerves they all arise central and medially from the brain stem

  • the oculomotor arises in between the cerebral punducles from the midbrain
  • the abducens arises from the ventral pons in the midline
  • the hypoglossals arise in the preolivary sulcus in the caudal medulla

This help us differentiate medial brain stem lesions at various levels
so loss of functions of these medial nerves should point to a lesion at the corresponding brain stem section
For example if we have a deviated tongue then we should think of a lower medullary lesion and so on
