This organism is thought to be carried as a normal commensal in the vagina of women in the reproductive years. Once you see this term in a USMLE question you have to immediately think of an obstetric or gynecologic related infections.

The most two common clinical scenarios are Toxic Shock Syndrome and Post Abortion. The infection is usually fatal despite the use of several potent antibiotics. The clinical picture is characterized by shock with extreme leukocytosis and profound hypotension.
