Taste sensation of the anterior 2/3 of tongue is mediated by cranial nerve 7. Now cranial nerve 7 primarily innervates the 2nd pharyngeal arch . The anterior 2/3 of the tongue is derived from the the first pharyngeal arch, however. Is this just a quirky anomaly we have to memorize?

Yes. live with it

The anterior two thirds of the tongue receives dual sensations. All general sensation and taste are carried by the Trigeminal nerve (which supplies the first pharyngeal arch) EXCEPT the taste buds on the vallate papillae that are supplied by the facial nerve. Actually the corda tympani of the facial nerve.

So yes you have to live up with this small anomaly :p
