Taste sensation of the anterior 2/3 of tongue is mediated by cranial nerve 7. Now cranial nerve 7 primarily innervates the 2nd pharyngeal arch . The anterior 2/3 of the tongue is derived from the the first pharyngeal arch, however. Is this just a quirky anomaly we have to memorize?
