Hi, Can someone please help me out...I have an offline version of USMLE World (2007-2008) and am wondering if anyone knows how much is the difference between that and the current Online version of USMLE World? Approximately how many questions are different between the two versions? Would you recommend spending the $100 to buy the online one? and why?

Thank you for your help/advice!

Also...as a side question...would you recommend doing Kaplan qbank or is USMLE World and NBME enough?

I don't know much about the offline version but am using the online version and it's great! you can pick questions based on subject (anatomy, pharm, etc) or system (cardiovascular, resp, etc.). your score on each test and overall is compared to others to get a percentile so you can get an idea of how well you're doing. the explanations help you learn a lot. plus the format is like the real exam (it has similar features: time at the bottom, lab values, etc.).

I got this information from one of the previous threads opened regarding the question:

The official legal UW is only available online from their website.

However, some folks have copied those questions and answers and put them into word or PDF files or whatever and then they distributed them illegally.

There's a member here who's having it but I don't know who he is.

I don't recommend that you do the offline (illegal) copy of UWorld and the reason is that they constantly update their questions on a weekly basis. They always have new question that reflect the current trend of the exam. So if you get the offline questions (which is usually old, like 2007 or 2008) then you will be missing these updated and new questions.

Also when you do the offline questions you won't get your true percentage and you can't compare your performance to others (both of these features are available in the original online mode).

For your second question, refer to this poll:

Hope this helps.

Anyone else?

Thank you for your replies...they really helped!

Does anyone else have any other info/reply that can further help me in my decision making?

Also, how long (# of days) does it take to finish the whole USMLE world qbank?

This guide is written by TTUHSC Medical School and it's specifically written for their students but it can be very useful for any student even International Medical Students can make use of it.

Also you can read Step 1 experiences in the forum, that might give you an idea as well.

Thanks for the reply...so you have done the 2009 usmle world too? and now are doing the 2010....and so far you have not seen any difference?...I have the 2008 offline(books) of usmle world...I would think they would be same as 2009 and sounds like also 2010?

no ive only done the 2010 version, but at the bottom of each question it tells you when the question was made and most of them are from 2009, so im guessing there must be a big difference between the 2008 and 2009 version.

I feel that buying the original subscription might be good because it will simulate the real exam conditions and not just answering new/old questions. Its apparently very similar to the CBT of actual exam so its generally recommended to use it properly.

I agree with this. It seems like a lot of IMG's use offline material; this is not so common is US med schools because you can get kicked out of school for it (just recently this guy in New York got kicked out of med school for pirating Kaplan material, for example). I think this may contribute to the higher pass rates among USMGs because they get a lot of practice under simulated conditions. This year, the average Step 1 score at my school is 230 with 100% pass rate. Every student did at least one official Qbank, either Kaplan or UW, but mostly UW. UW is one of the highest rated Qbanks among US students primarily because of it's similarity to the real test. I think that anyone who is serious about getting a good score should invest the money (yes I know it's costly) in an online Qbank.

There is of course also the added risk of not getting a true indication of how well you are doing since UW is the closest Qbank you're going to get to the real exam if you do the offline one before the online one since there is bound to be some repeated questions as i doubt they replace their entire Question bank within just a few years. Better not take that risk and just buy the online version from the start!Happy-2
