Hello everyone, this is my first post. I am taking Step2 in two weeks, I have been studying for a month- using MTB, Kaplan videos, and First Aid QA step2CK.

I have recently started doing UW since two weeks ago, but I have become greatly discouraged. The reason is, many questions or topics covered in UW aren't cover in any other places. And I think some questions are dug out of nowhere.

For example, one question asked the greatest risk for receiving TPN via Central venous line in an anorexic patient- of course I thought of referring syndrome and answered hypokalemia, but the correct answer was Central line infection!

How would I have known that risk of central line infection is greater than referring? How do you study for these types of question??

Also, on UW I have being doing 44 mixed unused questions timed which I get around 50-55% correct on average.

I have tried 44 mixed all questions and was able to get 70% three times in a row. Though there were many questions that I've seen before so I wasn't very excited about it. I am more concern of the questions that I haven't seen.

I am doing poorly and I really really have no clued what I should do. The questions are extremely random.

helped for me..

Hey,

I don't want to scare you but uworld is one of the most accurate parameters to what score you will receive on the actual exam. out of all my friends (many of them in residency now), they said the uworld assessment was the closest to their actual step 2 score.

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable going into the exam unless I was scoring AT LEAST 80% on the uworld questions.

how to approach them differently? Start doing your questions in subjects. like all of IM first, or OB or peds etc. . it will help you strengthen each one and also help you recognize what type of question you are looking at when they are all mixed together. Read each reason why the incorrect answers cannot be chosen. Often its just one small sentence in the vignette that will throw you off. Look for key words.

IF you can, delay your exam and finish uworld.

good luck!

my percentage (number of correct answers were average on 50%)- but my percentile is somewhere on 27th, which is even worse!! I would say percentile is more important because it compares you other people. Yet, mine isn't very impressive at all!

pichaya, dont get discouraged over uworld scores, in my opinion most of the material in uworld is NOT in mtbs, this is why you should make concise notes about them, cause ALL uworld material is high yield and tested on step2ck, so my advice is to use uworld as a learning tool, NOT as an assessment tool.

like smroalkvam said, UWSA is a great parameter to assess if youre prepared for step2ck, lots of concepts in that assessment I saw in the real step2ck, so uworld does a good job preparing for the test.

my point is that dont get discouraged or frustrated, I was in your shoes and no one told me this, so I figured it out by myself at the end, cause most of the questions, concepts and managements are brand new to our eyes, so its impossible to answer that question right, just study ALL questions well, explanations and every choice, and after uworld take an assessment test such as NBME, or UWSA if youre close to test, and from that point on I know that you would definitely have a clear picture of your prep.

thanks so much for the encouragement. I am starting to focus more in UW now than Kaplan lectures or MTB
