Recently a new iPhone app has been launched. It sports a new innovative idea for preparing for the USMLE. It tells you how to avoid the distractor!

This is an iPhone app created by two current residents who both have scored 99 in their USMLE Step 1 and CK and created a company called 99th percentile! They devised an idea to help students prepare for the exam easier.

Classic qbanks usually provide us with 5 or more options in each question and so we have to filter out those options until we reach the correct answer. DistractorAvoidance takes the crap out and presents you with two options only, the Distractor and the correct answer. This stems from the fact that most of us really end up being confused between two options in most of the questions that we face.

It's a great idea and the app design is really intuitive. It also monitors your progress and gives you your current status and your overall performance.

Currently, there's only one version for the CK/3 Exams and no Step 1 version yet. It has 352 questions presented in a "Flash Card" style that aids memorization and comprehension of the various topics.

The questions/flash cards are very well written and includes the highest yield topics that you'll see in USMLE Step 2 CK and USMLE Step 3 exams, seriously.

Here's a slide show of some screenshots of the app.

You can purchase the app for $24.99 from iTune App Store here.

There are a number of things we'd like to see it better in future versions to make this app even greater:

  1. $25 bucks is a little high price for 352 questions. They better either increase the number of questions or decrease the price.
  2. The topics index is not linked to the relevant flash cards.
  3. No iPhone landscape support.
Disclosure: I have no interest in promoting this app and am not affiliated with the owners and developers neither directly nor indirectly. The app was offered free to USMLE Forums for review purposes only.
