Graduated in '92, and did residency in my home country, then worked as a journalist in the U.S. for 10 yrs. Now, I am seriously considering returning to medical field. Many hurdles stand between me and accomplishing my goal, one of them is that I am about to finish my master degree from one of the American Universities in journalism. I have two failed attempts in USMLE step 1 in 2000. I am not that young, with relatively big family, which could mean a great deal of support too.
Your educated answers are greatly appreciated...

Yes, you have a chance

There are several points against you like the age, and the failed attempts.

But at the same time, you have positive points. You are not sitting idle your working in journalism, you are doing your master degree, and I bet you are an American citizen.

Let me tell you my friend's story;

He graduated in 1997, then he worked in hospital management in Canada (no clinical experience whatsoever) did MBA and stuff like that.
Then two year ago, he suddenly decided to return to medicine.
Step1 upper 80s, Step2 lower 90s, Step3 upper 70s, no USCE.
Got two interviews and matched in psychiatry in New Jersey last year!

Program directors appreciate hard working people. True, they look for fresh grads but also if they see an interesting, nice personality, in an old grad they'll also take...

Go ahead, nothing should stop

Ace the tests, get good score and go for it

I will be waiting your reply to this thread, after two years !!!

I am in the same boat , old graduate took half USMLE 1996 then due to personal reasons ,postponed the rest till expired, now I passed USMLE ck 82 & CS but failed step 1 twice now I preparing the 3d time
Since my graduation I'm working very hard in ICU & A&E, then 10 years Family medicine till present, attending lot of conferences in USA. If I passed step 1 do I have a chance for residency in IM or FM.
