Hello Everyone,

This is my first post/writing on this website.

I am an Indian medical graduate, graduation + internship completed(in India) in 1996
USMLE step 1 passed Oct 1998
step 2 (now called step 2CK) passed Mar 1999
CSA (now called step 2CS) passed 2004
step 3 passed Jan 2006
ECFMG certificate issued in ?2005/2006, can't remember exactly which year it was issued.
I have not got into a U S residency program, and I am currently practicing as a Specialist Registrar in Acute Medicine in the United Kingdom.

My question is, how long is the ECFMG certificate valid for? Is it permanently valid for life once you have been given/issued the ECFMG certificate? in other words, if I am offered, can I enter a U S residency program any year on the basis of my current ECFMG certificate, lets say for example in 2015 or even later, or do I need to re-validate or sit/appear for all the USMLE exams again???????????

Please give your valuable information.

Thanks
Praveen.

You have to take the CS exam again

On June 14, 2004. The ECFMG implemented new rules.
These new rules say that you there's no need anymore to re-validate CSA and/or English test. IMGs would pass the CS exam only and they will get a non-expiring ECFMG certificate.

Unfortunately, however, since you passed CSA before June 14, 2004 and you did not enter ACGME-accredited residency training in USA, You have to take the CS exam again.

Those IMGs who passed the CSA before June 14, 2004 and then entered into residency in USA can request what's called "Permanent Validation Sticker", obviously you are not in that category.

For more official details, I refer you to this ECFMG documentation

correction of the dates of my USMLE exams passed

Thank you for your reply.

My apologies, I was at work when I first posted my question on this website, and I did not have the exact dates of my USMLE exams taken and passed.

These are the dates of my exams taken and passed.
exam taken result
Step1 Oct 98 pass
step2 Mar99 pass
Step2CS April 30th 2005 pass
step3 Jan 31st 2006 pass

The score sheet does say that it is step 2 clinical skills I appeared for, I correct myself for saying CSA in the first instance. I hope this changes the outlook towards not me taking the step2CS exam again.

Do I have to apply for permanent validation or anything else to keep my certificate in good-standing?

Thanks,
Praveen.

then you can get permanent validation sticker

In that case you can apply for permanent validation sticker.

To do so you have to access your OASIS account.

If you don't have an OASIS account, then you need to call the ECFMG by telephone so that they open an OASIS account for you.

Thanks

Hello StepTaker,

Many Thanks for the information.

I do have OASIS account and access.
When I click to request permanent validation, this is the message I receive:

Status: "Not Eligible to request a permanent validation sticker beginning June 14, 2004 under the provisions of the new policies. Please click here to review the new policies. click here link http://www.ecfmg.org/news/jun1404.html

I am yet to review the above new policy.

Praveen.
