Elevated platelet and WBC counts are mentioned as causes of hyperkalemia.
How do these conditions cause hyperkalemia?

It's a false hyperkalemia

When you measure serum potassium you are not measuring the true plasma potassium. Serum is the plasma after clotting has occured. The clotting process release Potassium from cells into the serum therefore if you have too many cells (specially platelets or leukocytes) then you have a false increase in serum potassium which does not actually reflect the true plasma level.
