Barbiturates are P-450 enzyme inducers...& when we say induce, they act at gene level & increase the gene expression of P-450....which means more enzymes are synthesized....& P-450 enzymes have a heme grp in them...therefore heme synthesis is also stimulated. And as u know,in porphyrias, there is a def of the porphobilinogen deaminase...so when heme synthesis is stimulated, more of the substrates porphobilinogen,delta-ALA are gonna accumulate & worsen the porphyria.

Hope this helps.:)
