Externship In a Private Clinic?

"Does an externship in a Private Medical Facility(in the USA) where I know somebody whereby I could get a recommendation from a US doctor count for an IMG or it must compulsorily be in a University Hospital or Teaching Hospital?"

Thanks Lee,

if one is able to acquire practice in a private clinic, would it be legal to call it an externship, due to law prohibiting the touching of patients or is that state selective?
