Helloo everybody,

I am a fresh grad, IMG, have a double 99 score in step 1 and 2.
Unfortunately my step 2 cs got delayed because my visitors visa got rejected thrice and finally wen I gve CS i have failed in it.

However, the surprise is tht i have 3 interviews for prelim surgey from very reputed programs.
I want to know what my approach should be in the inerviews?
I am preparing for CS soon and the results will be out just beore the Match..
So guys can u pls tell me how will this affect my interviews..?

Focus on your strengths which are the double 99 and the fresh grad.
They sent you for IV even though they know you failed the CS.
Do not find excuses for the failed attempt if they talk about it, tell them that you are sure that you'll pass the next attempt.
Talk about your passion in surgery.
Talk about your willingness to learn and your enthusiasm to get into the American health care system.

Take a CS course before your next exam, so that you are sure you'll pass.

Go for it

My friend has got an exactly similar problem last year.

In the IVs they did not ask him about his failed attempt at all, they just asked him whether his ECFMG will be ready before ranking and he promised YES and he did.

He was matched in Ob/Gyn out of two interviews only.

Do not underestimate your chances, you can make it

Prepare very well for the IV, I'd recommend you get some IV training.

Residency Match Forum

Hi there!
May I have a question regarding apply for Residency Match?
How do you appy for Residency when CS is not completed. I'm grad from other country, pass step 1 & step 2 CK, failed CS. Can I apply for Residency now?

Theoretically yes you can but it's very unlikely to get any interview
I suggest you finish the CS and then apply to the Scramble

Externship?

u got 3 interviews widout ur CS result..have u got any US doctors LORs at the bginning process of application i.e, 1st sept..??

hi,i have another question ,i m preparing for step1.
is it possible to apply for residency only with passing one or two of these exams? if its theorically possible but i will have a little chance,can i try it or being rejected in IV has a bad effects on my next year application(which i ll have my step1,ck and cs scores)

This is just plain awesome.. 3 interviews in surgery is huge.. A big congrats to you.. If you dont mind can you please tell which programs send you interview as im also applying in surgery and waiting on more interview calls..

I have a question .

I failed CK on the first attempt . I took it again and passed.

But a lot of the programs mention on their websites that they only take applications of people who passed step 1 , step 2 and CS all on the first attempt .

So my question is do we still apply to these programs and hope they overlook the attempt ? Otherwise how are people who failed getting interviews ??

This post is from 2009. Things were easier. I think OP already matched long time ago.

So we just dont apply to programs which mention that they want a pass on the first attempt ?

Because honestly I am scared because so many programs mention this and I have an attempt in my CK .

You can apply for FM or Psyc, they're ok with one attempt usually, but you need to show that you're interested in FM or Psyc. IM is difficult for you.
I also recommend to do a long term observership (at least 6 months) in IMG friendly hospital. Impress them, they may take you if they like you. Of course ace Step 3 also.

Yes , I am actually going to be working as a Research Volunteer in a University affiliated Hospital and am also doing Observerships .

The Internal Medicine Program Director of the hospital where I did my Clerkship is willing to write me a strong letter of recommendation.

I know a Program Director in another hospital who is willing to call a few places to help get interviews there.

The only thing is I am keeping Step 3 on hold for now because I dont want to give it in a rush and fail it ( which is what happened with my step 2 ck ) just to have it on my CV . I'd rather have no step3 than a Step3 fail to add to my step2 ck attempt.

How does my plan sound ? Any other advice ?

I think you should strongly consider doing step 3, nothing worse in the PD's eyes than accepting a resident that will fail step 3 later on and not pass it before PGY3, As a result your contract will be terminated and the program will lose a resident, since you have an attempt which in turn rise concerns of your ability of passing step 3 , by doing it you will end these concerns.
