I have started preparing for my USMLE examination since August. I am planning to give my exam in Sept 2011. So far I have completed Physio, Patho and just about to complete pharmacology all from the Kaplan series + DVD's. I have not touched any other book yet. Now planning to start First Aid also.

But the real problem I am facing is I am forgetting things a lot. Is it me or is it with everybody else too.? And because of forgetting I tend to get more tense and then relax myself saying I will repeat it again. What should I do? Tell me a good pattern for memorizing things better.

my opinion

Let's do something and tell us what you will notice;
read subject A on day 1 and read it again on day 2
read subject B on day 1 and don't read it again
read subject C on day 1 and read it again on day 4
On day 10, try to answer some questions of each subject
I can guess the best answered will be subject A
I think the best way to memorize subject is two readings (or three if possible) within narrow time interval
Furthermore, as you finish the whole book before starting another one (this was not my type of study as I can't tolerate studying only one book for long time), It's a good chance for you to pause reading for 1 week before starting the next book and use this week to answer questions of the branch you have studied from kaplan Q bank for example...
Anyway, forgetting is absolutely normal to all of us

Most people feel like that. Its going to get worse as you draw nearer to the exam date.

You need to do questions every day to reinforce what you learned. you have lots of time so you should be doing at least 3 or 4 qbanks.

are good starts.

You shoulnd't be trying to blunt memorize everything. You need to understand the concepts and things will come a lot easier to you.

Every now and then I felt alone having the problem. But guys your responses have calmed me down. I loved forgetfulness syndrome topic. Well that's the life of a doctor struggling I guess.

reading and remembering

I have read that normally we can recall about 60-70% right after reading. 24h after reading you can recall 20%. I don't know if these numbers are correct, but anyway the thing is that you can't remember all (if you are just normal human).

You can however choose what things are more important and you can write notes about them and read the notes after you have read and 24h after so chances are that you remember those things.

All in all - everybody have problems in recalling. So thumbs up and have faith in your capabilities.
