Hi!
The official authorized to sign the form 186 is away. Can I get the form signed by a Notary Public instead in my country (not USA!)?? And if I get it notarized does the "form 186 for school official" have to be filled in later by the school official at a later stage?

Your medical school official has to sign it

Is there a section in your form 186 dedicated for notary public?

There are two versions of form 186, one to be verified by medical school official only and another to be verified by medical school official and notary public.

In any case your medical school official has to sign it.

I highly advise not to let any other official sign it because this may lead to discrepancy in ECFMG's database and they'll most likely reject it.

I got two different forms... 2 seperate links- one was Form 186 for medical school official only and the second link was "form 186 for signing by a notary public only"
They are 2 seperate forms asking the same info/same structure. the instructions didnt say that I had to complete both.... just one or the other

This is the first time ...

Last year we understood that the ECFMG changed their policy. Before they were accepting the form to be signed by a notary public only. But then they changed that to a new rule that the form has to be signed by both a notary public and a medical school official or in some cases medical school official only.

Your case is the first one that we encounter to have an "optional" medical school official OR notary public.

I suggest you give them a call right now and ask them how to proceed.

And please let us know what was their response so that we get an idea about their current policy.

I am cut-pasting the instructions I got after submitting the IWA:

"You are a graduate of a medical school that participates in the ECFMG Medical School Web Portal (EMSWP), and you do not have a valid Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) on file with ECFMG. Therefore, you must complete a Certification of Identification Form (Form 186).

Because your medical school participates in EMSWP, you are able to complete either a "Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) - Certification by Medical School Official" or a "Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) - Certification by Notary Public."

The on-line part of your application will be transmitted to ECFMG only when you click on one of the links to proceed to the Certification of Identification Form (Form 186)."

Annnnd I also called up ECFMG and they said I need to fill in only one version.... either the notary public one OR the medical school official form.... and it can be signed by the notary public even if the College is very accessible to you.... which ever is convenient! Regarding the Notary Public being from another country ie if you are living in any other country other than the USA.... they said that as long as the official who signs it has that title it doesnt matter...

Awesome

That's great

Actually, it makes sense, since your school participates in EMSWP then they don't need a medical school official to sign it since they'll be in contact directly with your school via EMSWP :redcheeks;

Go ahead, and grab any notary public right across the street from your home and let him sign it and then you mail it to ECFMG and you'll be verified in no time

Wishing you all the luck with your USMLE prep and thank you for add this information to our ECFMG forum.
