I paid up $880 on 23rd April 2010, ECFMG recieved my documents on 22nd june 2010, 4.5 weeks later it rejected my form 186 (as the college office had not renewed the sign and seal of the dean)
Subsequently the college office has done the needful, and i have gotten my form 186 signed. Now i have the following questions:
1. Do i need to resend form 344, 345 and 187?
2. How do i view my eligibilty period ( i know it is Sept-Oct- Nov, just want to check and be sure)
2. If i want to extend to this period to Nov-Dec- JAn, how do i go about it? Will i have to pay? (considering my form 186 has not reached them yet)
Will have to repay $880 (because i had paid 4 months ago) or only $50?
Do i have to resend form 186 again (a third time)with that application for extension?

Please help, my college office charges a lot of money for every procedure and takes a lot of time, i'm quite worried, any help is welcome.
Thanks

To check your eligibility period you need to log in to your OASIS account and then click on "USMLE Application Information" on the left side.

To request an extension of your eligibility you should log in to your IWA account and click on "Request Extension".

However, you cannot do any of these until your "Certification of Identification (Form 186)" status is shown as valid in your OASIS account.

You will also confirm your eligibility when you receive your scheduling permit but again they won't send you this until your Form 186 is validated.

Once you have Form 186 validated, it will stay valid for 5 years and you don't need to repeat the process again at any time (not with extension, not with application for another step).

The only time when you need to resend your 344, 345 is if your status changes from medical student to medical graduate.

Am not sure :notsure: If I did answer all your concerns please reply if you still have more queries.

Thanks a lot Sabio :) i am a graduate and have previously sent in form 344, 345 (alongwith the first form 186 that got rejected. ) This time i have a new photograph for my form 186, so i'm sending in a similar extra one. You have pretty much clarified the process completely.

Just one more thing though, after i get my scheduling permit do i have to confirm the same slot (sept-oct-nov) i had previously asked for? or is their some way in which i can choose the next one (nov-dec-jan) without having to pay the extension fee?

When you get your scheduling permit, then that's it and there's no way to change it except via a request for extension which would be Dec-Jan-Feb and there's no way you can do that without paying them $50.
One more caveat, you cannot request for more than one extension. So in your case the last time to take the exam is February. If you don't take it by the end of February then you have to pay again the whole $880 fees :toosad:

form 186 rejected twice

hey!i am a medical student from india doing my away rotations in the us right now. my form 186 has been rejected twice stating the seal or the stamp of the school official does not match. i called the ecfmg twice and the only information they provide me was that the seal and the signatures of the official from my medical school where updated in sept 2011.
i used a friends form who recently took his steps as reference to fill out my form in the exact same manner and got the exact same seals and signatures from my college but the form was yet rejected again.
i had applied for the august sept oct 2012 period and its already almost mid july and i havent figured out the problem with my form. i called the ecfmg again and they said i should attach a letter on my college's letter head bearing the current seal and signature from my college along with my form.
would that work?
que1) what is the appropriate step to be taken??
que2) what happens to my eligibility period?

you should ask your medical school to type a letter to ecfmg on school letter head wid subject as list of authorised individuals and then make a list (or jus t one individual )and the authorised seal and then get this letter signed by the authority .ur eligibility period will get automatically extended in case your your form is not accepted by 24 of july. this is all that i learned from my experience::cool:
