Dear All,

I have a question, can anyone get J1 visa or H1 Visa before residency program application? or you can get only visitor visa then when you are accepted, then the Hospital can get you J1 or H1 Visa? how is Visa a problem for application of hand on externship? how is visa a problem for application of residency? i hope some of you give me a clear answer.

Best,

you can only get the J1 or H1 once you are selected by the residency program , either in match or prematch . For J1 you will get IAP 66 sponsorship from ECFMG which you have to submit to the consulate . For H1B the program will provide you with all the paper work , but you have to clear step 3 to qualify for H1B. Most of the programs offer J1 and some H1b . you can do externship on visitor visa as no one will sponsor your visa for externship. There are some program which don't offer visa for residency training ,but most of IMG friendly programs do offer J1.
